Wasn't sure where to post this but here it goes...

I called yesterday to insure my newly purchased project chevy malibu and the chick on the phone said my VIN wasn't long enough. It needs to be 17 digits...I live in NJ if that makes any difference and I bought it from a guy in PA. I have the title...which matches the digits on the car. I'm not home at the moment and I don't remember how many digits I DO have. Am I missing something here guys? Please help.

Welcome to the site matthew.

Not to worry, our old cars were before the new VIN style started.
As long as the VIN matches what's on the title you're OK.

Welcome to TC, Matt
The 17 digit vin standard didn't start till 1981 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number ). Here's a link to a site that shows a 13 digit 1972 vin and will help you to decode your vin: http://www.chevellestuff.com/1972/vin.htm

The chick on the phone probably has never had to insure an older car.
Erich is correct. Prior to 81 there were 13 digit VIV's then in 81 they went to 17 digits where they are today.

One of the best lines from the movie.

"Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some * muscle"

Welcome Matt.. My advice on the Chick-v-Vin deal is, Don't call them again. Call Hagerty, Grundy or one of the other "collector car" insurer's.

I also have hagerty and I personally recommended them. However, I happen to know mr. Pop-up Piston here might end of wanting to drive his car more then hagerty will be ok with.

Yea plus I've got some violations and accidents so small chance hagerty will let me drive it plus bunch of paperwork to fill out for them. So for now I'm just throwing it on regular insurance for a couple months. If anyone wants to check ma ride out just look here...

They told me they do not check mileage. They do ask that I limit the number of times driving to work.

Wow I gotta talk to your agent. I was told I could only drive my car for the following reasons:

1. Car shows
2. Maintance/repair
3. "educational purposes"

I was also told I can never leave the car outside unless I'm supervising it.

That was 2 years ago, maybe the eased up

What exactly is a "pop up" piston? Aren't they all pop up pistons?

3 kinds of piston shapes

-domed
-flat tops
-dished

domed make the most compression and the most power. But I guess really cool people call them pop up pistons.

Side note: they aren't seen that much anymore because since the 60's we've found out that you make better power using flat tops and shaved heads. Well, some smart guy named smokey yunik knew that back then, but nobody listened I guess.
