: acceptable spindle wear

I stripped down a set of splindles off my parts car and noticed some wear patterns where the bearings ride.

The wear is mostly on the bottom side of the spindle (make sense since that is were all the weight would be). I measured top to bottom 1.246" on the worn portion and 1.250 on an unworn section of the spindle right next to the wear pattern. Is .004" wear acceptable? The side to side was only worn .001"

The bearings were new before I got the parts car. The wear pattern looks worse than it is by the way. More like a surface finish change. Thanks -John

If there are actual ridges where it is worn or any signs of heat discoloration, then I would look for new spindles. The bearings don't actually ride on the spindles unless they get run dry and start to grab, then they spin the bearing case on the spindle and cause what you see there. If you cannot feel any appreciable wear, then I'd hit them with some very fine sandpaper in stages and repolish them and go for it.

Just remember, it's your life and the lifves of passengers/pedestrians/other motorists at stack if something goes wrong! ;)

Goo dluck,

What you have there is junk, the inner race of the bearing should rest on the spindle-not turn(BEARINGS LOCKED UP).Time for a new spindle and bearings.

Not sure about the bearing area, but the middle part that looks like some chunks were taken out is normal. Mine and others I have seen look like that.

I am glad 70z15 posted that answer, I always wondered what caused that. Brakes always worked well, though...
