Looks good. Is that an aluminum water pump? I can't remember if mine was painted when I got it or not, mine is steel.

Check my last reply in the other post you started on the GMPP 454. It may be worth it to order a set of FelPro 1211 intake gaskets and install them right now. The stock ones work about as well as a sheet of newspaper.

Painted mine and installed the chrome valve covers from the 396. Looks almost like the 396 I pulled out, timing cover and balancer are different. The 396 had an Eddy RPM Performer intake, the one on the crate engine is almost identical, has the bowtie instead of the Edelbrock name on it.

purdy! I remember when i brought mine home!

One thing... Even if you like the black paint on the engine- clean it real good with wax & grease remover, then paint the whole block again with VHT engine paint.

The waterpump on mine croaked a few weeks after i got it running- i replaced it with a new one, and painted it myself- The paint on the waterpump still looked brand new when i sold it 3 years later- the rest of the engine's black paint looked terrible.

So definitely give it another coat of black, or whatever color you like before you get it in the car!

Its just a GMPP 454 - But we plan to dress her up a bit (chrome valve covers), and paint the block - water pump etc orange.

I noticed that there is no timing tab, did you guys put your own, or use an aftermarket tab, or did you guys use some timing tape ? Harmonic balancer doesnt appear to have the degrees written on it.

It should have timing marks on the balancer- mine did. Timing tab was just a molded in point sticking out from the timing cover- it was part of the cover.

Wife said that the bowtie on the intake HAS to be painted orange to match the block or I have to return the crate to GM. :noway:

Are you running an Eddie Carb on yours ?

No, I have Holley Street Avenger. Painting the bowtie orange is a good idea!

Check the torque on the intake bolts. After the breakin and it's cooled down check them again, maybe it will hold up. Good luck, it's a strong running engine, you'll have fun with it.

Although they say you need to order the dipstick the 4 qt pan I ordered from GMPP came with the tube and dipstick, new gasket, which I didn't use because the other was brand new. It also came with four main bolts to replace the studs that hold the windage tray and new oil pump pickup. You'll need to remove the pickup that's on there and replace with the one in the kit. You may want to tack weld it on so it doesn't fall out on you.

You'll need the fuel pump pushrod along with gasket, can get at any Chevy dealer.

If you have a dial-back timing light you don't need the balancer timing tape, some do prefer the tape. The pointer is molded into the timing cover and the balancer has the line in it.

Your distributor must have a melonized gear. I ordered the GMPP distributor and sold the old one with the old 402.

Possibly new valve cover gaskets, you said you're using your current valve covers. The valve covers on the 454HO have the seal embedded in the cover, not a seperate gasket.

Assume you have an auto, engine comes with a flexplate. If not you need an externally balanced flywheel.

I plan to use the fuel pump pushrod from the old engine. Is that okay to do that? I know MR Gasket sells them, and I can get one at GM as well although the dealers in my area have little to no knowlege on these engines.

I wanted to use the timing tape because the harmonic balancer has no markings other than a line for 0 BTDC. I have an MSD distributor with the melonized gear and ajustable vacuum advance - and an eddie carb (Thunder AVS with eletric choke) is going on. It gets cold up here in Canada.

Its going into a 1968 Chevelle, with a TH400, 373 gears, 3200 Stall. But in reality, it seems to function lower than that.

I have a nice set of gaskets for my old valve-covers - there are resuable and made of durable rubber - I have never seen them sold anywhere before.

I was going to use my Crane Roller rockers on this engine - however I have now read in 4 different places including Hot Rod magazine, on a stock 454HO, it actually loss 10HP when installed. Will only benifit if I put new springs, and a better cam. I'm not going that route. I also don't want to have to deal with valve lash adjustiments.

Thanks for the advice about the oil pickup - I read this, you have confirmed what I have already suspected.

Since I had one of those oil drinkers that GM would not stand behind,
AND, My Ranger had been in for brakes 3x in less than 90 days when my father died.

My rebuilt at 2,600 miles GMPP 454HO was painted

BRIGHT FORD BLUE

Whoa whoa whoa I think I see a potential problem here. Obviously, that engine got left out in the rain (the reason it is so clean) You will have to send it immediately to an address that I will PM you in order to have it thoroughly gone over to make sure there is no damage...

Not gonna bite are ya? ;)

Have fun with it. K

Attempt to remove the oil filter prior to installing it in the car and re snug it if you don't have to chisel it off. Re torque the intake bolts a couple times after a few heat cycles. I think your really going to like your new motor....Good Luck.

Suggestion, most of the runners on my intake were coated with oil. The gasket was worthless. If you plan on painting your engine change the gasket first. The one on the engine now covers the head up to the lip where the valve cover sits. The Fel Pro gasket is shaped like the intake. If you change it later you'll have to repaint that portion of the heads that is no longer exposed. I have to figure how to do that now.

As far as the tabs on the valley tray, the center ones interfere with the gasket, I notched the gasket to go around it. Looking at the the thickness of the gasket vs the tabs, I don't think the tabs will keep the intake from seating. Even compressed the gasket is still thicker than the tabs.

I cut those tabs off-----the front and rear ta bs hold the pan in just fine, and dont' interfere with mating surfaces

Congrats on your new 454 HO
I would certainly take Hank's advice and change the intake gaskets now
It doesn't get any more simple since its not installed in the car. Swapping it out later is never fun.

I checked it out. The center tabs are below the exhaust crossover. My intake does not extend down in that area like it does around intake ports so no inteference.

Cleaning the old gasket material off the aluminum intake is a pain. The gasket lifted right off the heads though because of all the oil under them.
