Hi guys, I'm thinking that I have people feeding off of my internet. There are times it's as slow as anything, and there are times the connection randomly closes. How do I secure my connection? Thanks guys!

wired/wireless ?
Internet provider?

They really can't tap in if it's wired. Wireless go into the setup of the router and enable WEP or WPA, you then provide a network key. You'll need to turn this on in your PC as well and enter the same key.

On my (cable Internet connected) wireless router I (1) gave it an odd name (not the default and not my name either) and (2) mine is configured by MAC address for wireless connectivity. I have the MAC address of my XBOX and laptop and configure my router to only allow those addresses access. There may be ways to crack it but it seems to work for my neighborhood anyway.

Your physical connection (cable, DSL, etc.) are normally subject to system loads. My cable (Internet and TV) is fed from one line to a splitter. A filter on the splitter then takes one line for my Internet connection. Even so I'm 'sharing' the cable feed not only with my TV (when cable is being viewed) but with everyone else on the same cable line in my neighborhood and there are occasions it'll slow down during peak cable usage.

If you have DSL you will notice capacity slow downs, especially if you are a distance from the hub.

Depending on your connection and location, now that school is back in it's not uncommon to see the connection speed drop in the late afternoon when they get home and jump online. It happens here from time to time and is the only explanation that I've found.

I have Comcast, but I don't think I entered a security key?

Comcast provides the modem. If you have wireless I don't believe they provide a wireless router. If they do you can check with them on how to set it up. If you bought your own wireless router you'll need to read the manual, they all pretty similar and not hard to do.

Turning on the wireless security also encrypts the data going over the air so it can't be picked up by a hacker. Not very easily anyway.

You can always type in you ip address (in internet browser) and set all your passwords through there. I rather set everything through there.

I use MAC Address filtering to keep others from using my wireless.

google (http://www.google.com/search?q=securing+a+wireless+router&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) is your friend.

Ryan, are you using a wireless router in your house or are you concerned about slow network speed? If you have a wired (cat-5 or6) cable plugged into your PC from the cable modem then you can't be tapped into unless your PC has been compomised by a hacker. If you have a wireless router (Linksys, 3-com, etc.) you can be tapped especially if you have nor secured it. 87Caprice was probably saying that the web interface to access the wireless router gives you the ability to password protect and secure your device. Use the highest encryption and WPA if your PC wireless supports it to secure your wireless. Also, use a static IP and not DHCP at home, it will add an extra step needed for a hacker to attach to your network. Let me know if you need hel with this, there are private addresses that can be used for internal networks.

Ryan,
Does your modem/router have antennas coming out the back of it?

Hi Matt. Yea, it does have an Antenna. There is no physical cable going from the modem to the computer. It's not a lynxis. It's a cheaper one. When I was setting it up, it asked me to do this step, but I didn't know what it meant, so I skipped it.

you would go through your pc internet settings/configuration and get the ip address. it will be something like 192.255.110.1. Or easier, just go to your command prompt and type in ipconfig/all (i think thats correct) and it will be there. Once you get that number, go to the internet and type it in your browser. There you will see everything you need in order to lock it up. I just relocked my internet up yesterday after a week of it being unlocked for testing my iphones and other gadgets. When I went to lock it yesterday I have like 18 different people feeding off my net.

NOT ANYMORE:noway:

EDIT: And by the way, like Chevelle-Nut said, use the WPA settting. It will give a really ridiculous password that you WILL not remember. Its freaking long and retarded. Hope you get it all sorted out.

I can't seem to find my IP Address anywhere. The IP address of your PC?

1. Go to a DOS/COMMAND prompt such as Start > Run > CMD <enter>
2. Type IPCONFIG <enter> or IPCONFIG /ALL <enter> for additional information.

If your system is set up (as most are) to obtain an IP address from your Internet Service Provider, it may change from time to time but generally only the last octet.
