Help! I’m going crazy. graemlins/clonk.gif I installed a new AGR saginaw type pump in my old power steering reservoir. The reservoir was sanded and repainted. I took great care to make sure no paint got on the inside. It looks fine. Now the @#$% thing will not stop leaking. The leak looks like it is coming from the stud in the back, the one used to attach the mounting bracket. I’m going to by a new gasket kit and try again, but before I try and get more mad  , are there any tricks, methods, torque values or sequence, etc that would increase my chance of success.

maybe the flat O ring that seals that spot got knocked out of the spot where it is supposed to sit.

I agree with Leo, use a little bit of light grease or vaseline to hold in place when installing the can. I also start the bolts before tapping it all together.

In 1980 the power steering pump housing front mounting pad tapped holes were converted to metric threads. Before 1980 they were 3/8-16 UNC threads. From 1980 forward they were M10x1.5 threads. The reason I mention the mounting pad threads is that in 1980 the sealing cavities in the housing behind the rear studs were also deepened.

If the pump housing has metric mounting holes in front you need thicker square cut seals to seal the studs in the rear. Your reservoir will fit the newer metric pump housing with no problems.

The company where you purchased the pump should know about the housing cavities for the sealing rings and that there were two different housing depths. The newer, deeper cavity accepts a larger section seal and is supposed to be more secure from leaking.
