Just wondering if I swap a 200-4R in place of my powerglide, will bolt right up to the cross member and same driveshaft or do I have to swap parts out?
I just saw a 2004R for $300 from a 40K mile Monte SS.
Please let me know asap so I can get it before someone else does.

Im looking to do this with my 64,, and from what ive learned here,, yes -- it should bolt right up,, same drive-shaft,, you just need to re-locate the cross member a little bit.

Yep. x2. And sounds like a deal!!

Shiftworks.com has a kit that'll get you the right linkage for the shifter. You'll need a kit for that plus the cable instead of the rod for the PG. I'm sure other places have this stuff, too, depending on what you need after you get the stuff.

The tranny mount for a 200-4R is about 6-1/2" aft of the PG mount.

Contact Bowtie Overdrives:

http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml

This is the Transmission Crossmember you want to install:

http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog_inc/viewitem.php?ITEMID=83

The Crossmember bolts in the stock location and when you drop the transmission pan, you will not have to remove the crossmember.

First = Can I re-use the stock crossmember or do I need to get the bowtie overdrives crossmember.
Second = I will be keeping the 283 so with the new 2004r trans, I'd like to get some ideas on the right choice for a converter. Not sure what gears I have yet.

you can use the stock crossmember you will probably just have to move it a few inches. some cars have multiple holes already drilled in the frame, it may be as simple as scooting it over. i think the BTO crossmember just allows you to use the factory x-member mounting location and i think it adds extra clearence for exhaust.

Also, with the Bowtie Overdrives Crossmember, you will not have to remove the crossmember when you drop the transmission pan for a filter and fluid change.
When you use a stock crossmember, you have to remove it for a transmission service.

My '65 SS with a 10 bolt has 3.08 gears. (37/12) I'm guessing they're original. For me, the only way to know for sure was to take off the cover and count the gears. God only know how long that fluid had been in there, anyway! I didn't get a new gasket, just a ton of the black sealer. Now I actually know what the gears are without guessing and I know when the fluid was changed--- With my stock tires, I spin 2500 rpm's at 60 mph (with my 1.00 TH350 gear) and 3000 at 70. That would translate with the .67 OD to 1675 and 2010 rpms respectively. The convertor for that? I imagine you'll be looking at pretty much stock, right? Somebody would know better than me. But as I'm thinking along the same lines for a swap, I'm also interested!

I did exactly this on my 64.
Used same driveshaft, unbolted xmember, moved it towards rear about 6" as stated (holes might have already been there, I don't remember - no biggie if they're not).
I did NOT have to remove xmember to pull trans pan.
Easy easy swap.
