: Anybody Ship A Whole Dash Before?

I've got a couple of old Monte dash's I'm going to be selling but what I'm finding out is how hard it is to wrap some of this stuff. If you've ever shipped one, where did you get a box and about how much was it to ship? Mine have the dash pad, cluster, and wiring harness, which makes them even heavier.
Any input is appreciated.

Yes - biggest dang thing ever! I actually received it along with harness, radio, vents, etc all separate in the same box. It was STUFFED with crumpled newspaper and foam peanuts and in a customized carboard box framed with 2x2 edges and shingle-stake sides. If I remember right, it came via Greyhound and it actually wasn't bad. Maybe $50 to ship it x-country on a bus.

After that, Greyhound became my #1 favorite for over/odd sized packages !

I would consider making a crate from plywood to protect the dash. Cardboard is too flimsy. The weight will be more but it should get there in one piece.

Thanks for the Greyhound tip! You know they aren't grey anymore, guess I'm showing my age.

I shipped a radiator support once. I just sealed in in scrap cardboard boxes. I'm sure you could wrap it in bubble wrap them wrap it in cardboard.

I've shipped an all metal '67 Chevelle dash before. I used a bicycle box, obtained from Walmart trash. Cut the box open lengthwise and rolled the dash up in the length of cardboard. I had fastened a couple of cut-to-length broom handles to the dash for stiffeners. Held the layers of cardboard wrapping bound with bands of duct tape.
It traveled well...

That's a good idea Bill and it made me think of another. A refrigerator box cut down and maybe some of those cardboard corners they put on them for shipping. Thanks!

I noticed this post earlier today.

And I know you're being very serious about shipping them correctly, but...

1st thing that came to mind was ,

"No, but I'm sure a few folks got theirs in pieces."

I hope you enjoy the humor.l:)

As far as Bill's post goes, my humorous side saw the recipient of the metal dash...coming home from work...and seeing the bicycle box...in the shape of a banana...after being run over by someone carelessly backing up. l:)

(As you can tell, I am easily amused)

OK, I'm done laughing....NOPE l:)

Then again, I just looked at mine a few moments ago.

And I thought, "If I have to send this out to be "re-chromed", I have no idea how to get it there safe."

So I am wondering if any of the dash restoration places have a solution for you? Either way, I'll be watching this post for answers.

I shipped one from MD to TX. I built a wood crate for it. I also included a radio and a dash pad. Buyer paid $156.00 for shipping.

If it is 30 year old plastic, you cannot be too careful. Cardboard would be hoping for too much TLC on the part of the shippers. And wood will boost the cost quite a lot. There is no easy answer.

I shipped one from CA to TX once. Built a custom wood crate made of 1/4" plywood and 1-1/2 square doug fir. Used drywall screws to screw together. Then wrapped in cardboard. Worked great. Just takes a little time. But you don't have to worry about it getting damaged.
These dashes are too fragile to ship any other way IMHO.

Anyone bought a reproduction dash? How did they ship it to you?

Jeffry,

I worked shipping and receiving over at True Connections for a few years, a couple years ago. The dashes came to us already in a pretty stout cardboard box. They had a little bit of bubble wrap around it. I would just open the box, add some more bubble wrap, and send it on it's way. However these boxes were more of a heavy duty box. Where the flaps of a normal box butt together, these ones were full length, so you folded one down, then the other on top. It was that way on the top and the bottom, so it added some good strength.

Another member brought up a good point. Those Monte dashes are 40+ year old brittle plastic. The new ones we shipped were a little bit more forgiving than those. Plus if the shipper busted up ours, we just had a new one sent out. Can't really do that in your case.

I think the wood box is probably your best bet. However if you didn't want to do that....I'd wrap the whole thing in numerous layers of bubble wrap. Then wrap it in cardboard. Then pack that into a box, and add lots of packing so it can't move.

Good luck. :)

When we were building and shipping Custom Dash Inserts, we would buy a few '68-'72 complete dashes. Bought either 14" x 14" or 16" x 16" boxes that were 40" in length, and made a slide-over box with 2 of them. Filled them full of foam peanuts to protect the dash itself, and never had a problem. Hope this helps.
