: Broken off bleeder screw!!!

Well, the guy that sold me the calipers said they were ready to go, but one of the first things I noticed last night is that one has a bleeder screw broken off in it! Lovely.

I asked the parts store guy today if there was any way to remove it and he said no. Well, I've at least heard of an Easy-Out, so I'm wondering if I can save this thing, or should I save my sanity and just pony up the bucks for a rebuilt caliper?

How stupid. The other one is banged up and I bought a new one. Hope it too doesn't break off when I try to remove it!

If there is any sort of screw left to get a small needle nose vice grips on. You may be able to heat it up with a torch and clamp on it and remove the screw.

Most calipers arent that expensive for the A-Body anyways. Were these new calipers?

Chris.

Its really not worth messing with, rebuilt calipers are cheap. You have to drill it out, retap, and replace the bleeder..and hope you did everything right so it doesnt leak. If you want to get them out without breakage heat the area of the caliper around the bleeder screw with a hand held propane or mapp gas torch (not oxy- acetelyne) and put a vice grip on it or a six point socket. If the bleeder is worn normally a wrench will just slip off. If it breaks it was too rusty anyway smile.gif

I got the other bleeder loose with no problems. The broken off one is broken off without anything at all to grab hold of. It's really no big deal to get another one, but it pisses me off, because the guy told me they were good, and I paid for shipping on them. I paid good money to have something shipped to me that was junk. Hell, I would've much rather he just not sent the junk caliper and I could have bought another one outright. Oh well.

Tom,
You can drill out the bleeder screw.I use a left hand drill bit.Sometimes you get lucky and they turn out while your drilling. The bleeder is softer metal than a regular bolt and they already have a pilot hole dead center.
Pull the bleeder from the good side for a reference and pick a bit thats just slightly smaller than the thread size and use some tape as a depth measure so you don,t drill too deep.Drill it, then pick, ( with a dental style pick),the remaining thread from the caliper threads. If you drill it right the thread will just unwind from inside the caliper.Run a tap through it and replace the bleeder.Try it,unless your pressed for time you got nothing to lose. :D graemlins/thumbsup.gif

You might also want to use some lubricant while doing this too.

Those EZ-outs work charms if you don't mess up the threads while drilling a hole. I'd pick up a set anyways...you might luck out and be able to use the smallest one. They've saved me a few times.

I'd throw the caliper out!
(Actually just use it for a core)
FYI, I bought two Raybestos LOADED calipers for my '70 today...cost $32.75 each!

Tom, take a flat blade screw driver a little bigger than the hole and tap it in there and then just turn it out. Make sure its a "good" screwdriver and not a cheapo made in china (weaker metal) one.

You should be able to buy rebuilt Chevelle calipers from the parts store for about $15 each. Not woth messing with unless it is a special caliper.

I must be shopping in the wrong part of America.
Fer the record, they're '88 Camaro rear calipers, not regular Chevelle calipers.

However, I just bought rebuilt Chevelle calipers the other day and they cost $35 each for just the caliper.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm gettin' the major shaft from these parts stores. All the prices you guys are giving me are 2/3 lower than what I'm finding in my area.

Oh, and I did try tapping a screwdriver into the screw, and it's for darn sure stuck in there good. I needed to give the rearend shop a caliper so they could mock it all up while they assembled the rear end, so I gave them that one and just asked them to try and remove the screw for me if they could.
