: z-16 rear end
Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 5:02 PM I'll keep it short and sweet. Lets just say that I bought a rear end today that was supposedly for an Impala but turns out its for a 12 bolt Z-16 Chevelle. Axle code GA 0107G. Can any of you resto gurus confirm this?
I'm actually trembling a bit wondering if this is a Z-16 rear end
Mike Sep 10th, 09, 5:15 PM See if it fits what's listed/shown here:
http://www.z16chevelle.com/Z16%20Facts.htm
Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 5:44 PM It fits the criteria of being a "GA" code axle. I sent z16chevelle.com a email with my info and codes. We'll see what they say. I can only hope...
Mike Sep 10th, 09, 6:01 PM Date might be a month early or not.
Brake size the same as shown on the Z16 site ?
Good luck.
Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 6:21 PM Its got 11" brakes but so did an Impala. I'm still trying to find a good picture of a z-16 rear. All the ones i've seen the gas tank blocks the view.
Brettd85 Sep 10th, 09, 6:25 PM That would be cool indeed! I would sell it! $$$$. :D
Mike Sep 10th, 09, 6:26 PM Yeah ,the Z16 came with the full-size Chevy outer wheel bearings and brakes.
Read the info on the rear - http://www.z16chevelle.com/Z16%20Facts.htm
Lilracr Sep 10th, 09, 6:33 PM Put up some pictures......
I will give you a hundred bucks for it! :D

Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 6:36 PM I dont' think it is from a z-16 after doing more research. Z16 chevelle.com says "GA" code was the z16 but there has to be Impala rear ends that also got the GA code. This rear has the UCA mounts on the axle tube not the cast center, but alot of research shows that the Z16 had the Impala rear suspension and some say shortened Impala axle tubes.
LEO J Sep 10th, 09, 6:44 PM What the hell do you mean it not from a z16!!!?
Lionel-n-Chevelles Sep 10th, 09, 6:59 PM Good Luck Brian.
Please keep us posted.
Mike Sep 10th, 09, 6:59 PM Only GA code I see for an Impala is a 66 w/3.07 and 67 w/3.08.
What's the casting date on your housing ?

Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 7:09 PM It is an open 3.07 and the date code is L305, December 30, 1965. Which is a 1965 rear but quite late in the season to be for a 65 model. I found a pic of a z-16 and from the little bit I could see it has different mounts for the special z-16 sway bar.
blubu Sep 10th, 09, 8:39 PM A Z-16 would not be a open rear
I believe you will find that statement wrong
Does not seem right but the ones I have seen were open
floyd66 Sep 10th, 09, 8:52 PM All Z16 were open, this is a good fact to remember for car trivia night :D
Mike Sep 10th, 09, 9:02 PM Yeah Brian ,that's a Dec 65 for a 66 year full size car.
Oh well !
jeffschevelle Sep 10th, 09, 9:20 PM I responded to Brian's direct email to the Z16 website before I saw this post. Sounds like you've already correctly determined that it is not a Z16 rear. All production Z16’s were built between Feb. and April of 1965, and all real Z16 rears have center sections that were cast on the same day in December 1964, and the all were assembled on the same two days in January of 1965. Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 9:55 PM Thanks guys. I was in a panic for a bit thinking I found the holy grail rear end instead I ended up with the rear I intended to buy. OH well :)
Brian J Sep 10th, 09, 10:14 PM Jeff,
I did recieve your email response. Thanks for getting back so quick. Here's a pic of the rear. It's identical to the other B-body 12 bolt I have. What confused me was that alot of things said the Z16 used Impala parts for the rearend. I know the difference between the typical A and B body rears but the special Z 16 option had me wondering if it had the UCA mounts on the axle tubes like a Impala.
So maybe I have a weird/undeciphered GA code Impala rearend???

The Z16 rear is a Chevelle center section, with Impala tubes and axle bearing seats, but with Chevelle mounting brackets and spring perches. The Z16 sway bar you referred to in an earlier post above bolts to the lower control arms and does not change anything about the axle itself. Jeff
LEO J Sep 10th, 09, 10:31 PM Damnit!!!!
LEO J Sep 10th, 09, 10:33 PM Oh well...
