Im on my 2nd rebuilt box in my 72 and they all have leaked bad. they work fine, just leak. has anyone changed the seals on the input and pitman shafts and how bad was it (any tricks) or does anyone have any suggestions where to get one that doesnt leak. want to get this solved without having change the box again cause it is painted charcoal grey.

thanks,
Joe

I have posted a set of Saginaw instruction sheets on rebuilding their recirculating ball power steering gear.
Go to www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp (http://www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp) and down load the five papers toward the end of the listings:

Saginaw RB Power Gear Disassembly & Repair Pics #1, #2, #3, #4, & #5.

One thing to look out for, old gears usually have rusty pitman shafts and input shafts (the part just past the seal that is exposed to the environment.) Make sure that you polish the rust off of the shafts before installing the new seals. As you install the new seals, you must push the seal over the part of the shaft where the rust has been. Any rust that is left on the shaft will scrape the seal lips as you install them and you will have a leaker - again!
