What are the correct colors for the 69-70 SS wheels? Is the light silver or argent the same as the Vette and Camaro ralley wheels? Thanks Thomas

The spokes are a silver, I would assume the rally wheel paint would be close enough. The insets are a dark charcoal gray metallic, they are not black. I believe resto places sell the colors in a spray can.

There is even a mask kit that simplifies masking the spokes on the wheels. I recommend it.

If I wanted to shoot it out of a paint gun. Does anyone know what are the correct colors, should have been clear on what I was hunting.

The silver is Argent Silver. PPG DQE8568, or Dupont equivalent '68 GM Silverstone Silver 4907K. The backside of '69-'70 SS wheels is Dove Gray. Sorry I don't have a code for that but Krylon has a rattle can Dove Gray that matches well.

Thomas, if you do a search you will find a lot of info on the subject. Also there is a debate on the color of the spokes being black or charcoal gray. Here's one post from ago

For what it is worth.. way back in 1977, I repainted a set of wheels on a 70ss and the sanding dust from the dark part of the wheel was dark green. The wheels had never been repainted before. So the proper color is ????

I've been lucky enough to see a few survivors this past year, 70 LS6 and 69 300 Post SS. The centers on these cars were more gray, not black. Also the silver is not really silver, more a very light gray/silver.

Here is a picture of an original / unrestored 69 SS Wheel. There has been much written/speculation about the colors. From what I have seen, there are some variations in color with original wheels. I have seen insets that look almost black and others that appear dark gray. This wheel is off a 29K mile 69 SS survivor that the owner specified the trim rings be left off. The dark inset is a very dark gray, almost black with a slight metallic to it. Hard to tell in the picture.

Woj,
Is that a spare wheel? Looks like it's not had any lug-nuts tightened on it. I see where it did have the center hub trim on it at one time. The dark area appears to be a semi-gloss, eh?
Let's see the back side, too, if you can.
What are the codes by the valve stem?
That would be a good wheel to match paint samples to.

Dan,

That is the spare off a friend of mines low mileage 69 SS. I checked the date and wheel code from another picture and it is dated 1 27 and it is a YA wheel. I don't know if the spare has ever been mounted or not.

I don't have any back side pix of this wheel, but I just shot some from the unrestored wheel in my 69 SS (the front side had been repainted by a previous owner, but the backside is untouched). This is also a YA wheel dated 3 19. This should be a fair representation of the original paint.
