Wifes HD failed on her laptop. Can you buy a replace the HD like you can with a desktop?

Depends on the brand/model.
Have a look here - http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/

Typically, yes.

Usually a little door on the bottom held on with a screw that has the hard drive underneath.

Yes, 2.5" SATA/PATA drives. Look at Tiger Direct , New Egg, or your local store. They are usually mounting from the bottom as mention above. I have also seen them as slide out pieces, like a DVD Drive or Floppy. I have also seen laptops where the hard drive is under the keyboard. In all cases, it is easy to get to and can be swapped out in a matter of a few minutes.

Take the old one out first, before heading to the store... to make sure you get the right terminal end.

Took the HD out of my daughters old laptop. Don't remember the brand but the laptop died. Plugged it into my Dell laptop so I could save some files on it.

you can replace the harddrive out of most any laptops. I replaced a drive in a G4 Mac last night. It was sort of a pain to get to, had to pull the keyboard and bezel and remove about 30 screws to get the carriage apart, but in the end it was a typical 9 mm (2.5) laptop drive, EIDE. Now, I just need to find a cd with Mac OSX on it to reload the operating system.

I swap out the SSD drive in my Dell Mini 9 all the time...one drive runs Linux; the other is Win XP.
Takes about 30 seconds...4 screws.
Haven't found a drive big enough yet so I can just leave it alone and dual boot. :(

Solid State is in its infancy, give it some time. You have to love the instance access though.
