Here's another "gremlin" I need help with. Dome and passenger lights work correctly when door opens.closes etc. but my back-up lights come on when I turn the key and remain on while car is running. Brakelights/tail lights work as they should, as does fuel guage. New harness from tail lights to rear of trunk connection This is in a 69 SS with M-21. Any clues??

Do you have the key-lock reverse lockout linkage hooked up. It runs from transmission to collar on steering column, under the hood near firewall. This often removed when headers are installed because they interfere with the linkage.
The linkage rotates the collar on the column, you can also rotate the collar on the column inside the car below the key. This collar activates the backup light switch. If you have the linkage hooked up it probably needs adjusting. If no linkage rotate collar until lights go out.

That was it, Hank. Only thing is I've changed the linkage to Hurst so no physical link from trans to column. Pulled the backup lamps to short term solve the problem.

I think you can just grab the steering column and turn it by hand to make the light turn off. I used to have to turn the column to get my key out sometimes.

Found that to be true Gilbert. Have settled for not having back-up lamp in holders.... I'm unwilling to struggle with the column.

I had the same problem, I just unplugged the connector for the reverse lights which is connected to the reverse light switch, a white half moon thing located on top of steer column 4 inches from the firewall.

the only thing that can cause your reverse lites to come on is the neutral safety switch. it is the half moon switch on the lower part of the column or in the console ****er. It appears that your safety switch is holding in the reverse position.
