: 66 Headliner Install Big Problem, is the headliner made wrong???)
Brettd85 Sep 8th, 09, 11:29 PM In the process of installing my headliner in my 66. I put all the bows in their proper spot. I started with the center little wire and bent all the little tabs back into place so its holding the wire in the proper spot. Then I put all the other rods in and put them in their alignment channel.
Heres the problem...
When I started stretching it forward to clip it, before it got even close to tight the front rods started popping out of the slide slots.:confused: I think the headliner strips are too wide between rods. The back slots are fine and I can get the rear tight.
For reference, this is what the alignment slot looks like for the front rod.

This is what the headliner looks like with the rod as far forward as it can go without coming out of the slot(see pic). Its hard to tell but its sagging pretty good and not close to tight. Even if you pull on the sides it is still sagging alot.

I'm going to call OPGI tomorrow morning but I am thinking it must have been made wrong. Any opinions welcome. Thanks! :beers:
Kevin R Sep 8th, 09, 11:51 PM Brett pull the head liner to the rear first then clamp it. Then move on to the front. Having pulled to the rear fist will keep the bows inplace.
Or you just may be pulling to hard forward.

OK,, :o:o Kevin was right. I had thought about pulling it back first but figured because the center rod was fixed, that it wouldnt change the front at all. I did'nt account for the amount of movement in the rod routing channel. The rod was still close to the front but it wasnt popping off.
I've got it all clipped up, looks good. Going to add some heat and glue it tomorrow.
Thanks Kevin. :thumbsup::beers:
bb1966chevelle Feb 25th, 11, 7:59 PM I ordered my headliner today. I must admit that i'm a little worried about doing it. Is it hard to get them tight and look factory installed? Are there any after pics of yours finished? Would you do one again or was there alot of cursing and throwing tools around?
Raven1 Feb 25th, 11, 8:25 PM Headliners are easy, they just require patience. You have to be willing to chase the wrinkles, even if it means going back into a previous stretch. Slice the sleeve ends if needed, and they usually require it. Contact cement is strong, you don't really need a bazillion clips, but if it makes you feel better use them. A heat guns will help a lot, small residual wrinkles will vanish. Did I mention patience? If you have it, you will walk right through the installation.
FlameOut Feb 26th, 11, 11:11 AM Just like Raven (Scott) posted, they really aren't that difficult, although when you first attempt, it will be kind of intimidating, but once you do it, you will say it wasn't that bad.
Read through the sticky for the headliner install and you will be able to do it
bb1966chevelle Feb 26th, 11, 11:13 AM Great, thanks guys!
I didnt even know there was a sticky for it..... But I will be sure to read it several times!
1966_L78 Feb 28th, 11, 12:42 AM I agree with whats been said... I was worried but figured I'd give it a try...
It took some time and patience, but I doubt I'll ever pay someone to do the job...
67shovel Feb 28th, 11, 9:10 AM It reminds me of making up a bed sheet. It lands on the bed with wrinkles but if you pull on the correct corners it ends up fine. This summer the sun will heat it up enough to take the small remianing wrinkles out. A steamer helps on the bigger ones bt you should be able to stretch it preety tight originaly.
cheveslakr Feb 28th, 11, 10:51 AM I stretched my liner and clipped it all the way around, left it set for a day and came back and glued the next day. Absolutely no wrinkles, this was after laying it outside for a few hours in the sun. I didn't, however install that white fluffy insulation as mine didn't originally come with it. I'll find out this summer if I should have.

Prewarming before stretching really makes a difference.
d1_bradley Mar 1st, 11, 11:54 AM Hard to tell from the photos but, did you cut the 'pockets' back far enough to pull liner side-to-side on the rods and still have slack at each end? I had to go back and clip mine to give more slack at each end. The 'bottom' picture shows wrinkles on the 'rods'. They should be tight before hooking everything up.
legrismike Mar 6th, 11, 11:37 PM Did you cut a hole in the listings to slide them into those center clips? I just bought a headliner this weekend and am going to give it a shot but have a few questions not addressed in tthe stickey. For instance i have that listing wire and I know it goes in the middle listing, but what are the little clips you talked about bending back on the wire? I dont have any such thing. Any helpl would be appreciated.
