: Replacing rear coils, any magic involved?
Cecil May 6th, 04, 1:26 PM Well, my new coils keep staring at me every time I open the garage, maybe it's time to put them in. Is there any magic involved in replacing them? It's a 71 Sprint, and it looks to me like all I have to do is a little wrenching, compress the old spring and it will come out, then compress the new one and it'll go in. Seems too easy to me.
Am I missing anything?
As usual, advTHANKSance...
You probably won't have to compress the springs at all. At least I didn't.
Just raise the car, and put jack stands under the frame. Unbolt the lower shock bolts and allow the rear end to sag. Just fish 'em out of there.
Worked for me.
elcamino72 May 6th, 04, 1:43 PM Tim hit it right on the head ... remove the lower shock mounts and lower the rear, they'll FALL out.
Cecil May 6th, 04, 1:46 PM That's music to my ears!
Thanks!!!
Cecil May 7th, 04, 1:18 PM I don't suppose I could use the sagging rear coils I replace to replace the even saggier front coils, could I?
Rich-L79 May 7th, 04, 2:33 PM Nope, the fronts and rears are completely different.
Do make sure the that the pigtail at the end of the top of the coil matches up with the proper depression in the frame mount or the car will not ride on the coils properly (it will sit higher than it should).
What size engine do you have in that Sprint? Might be able to help you out with some front coils.
Tim
Cecil May 7th, 04, 2:56 PM 454, quite a bit heavier than the 350 the thing came with from the factory. When I got the car it had a 402 in ot, which expired after a few months...
Thanks!
Cecil May 8th, 04, 2:13 PM Wow, that was easy! Thanks for the assist...

Wow, that was easy! Thanks for the assist... Now that you're an expert on coil spring replacement, why don't you come up to TC and help me with my front springs? When we're finished we can go over to Muha's house and drink his beer.
Cecil May 8th, 04, 3:40 PM I haven't tackled the front ones yet, but I like the idea. In fact, let's just skip the springs altogether and just go drink John's beer? It'll have to be a surprise so he won't have time to hide the good stuff...
John_Muha May 10th, 04, 3:04 PM A couple of no shows this weekend. Could have used a hand putting a centerlink in the boy's truck. He came over looking like something left over from the night before. Wasn't turning a wrench real fast.
