when I download a file to "downloads" I cannot execute it. any suggestions,

using vista ultimate

Might just need more info than you gave.
If you d/l an exe file ,you can't run it?
Or you can't open/view a file you d/l 'd?

This just happen or has it been an issue?
If this just happened ,go here (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) ,click on 12 and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Create a restore point before you do this.

May be a file association problem. May have accidently set the association of exe files to behave different.
