: Shades of the Past and Grand Rod Run - Pigeon Forge, TN
Roberty Sep 7th, 09, 8:54 PM Anyone going to the Shades of the Past in Pigeon Forge this weekend or to the Grand Rod Run next weekend? I'm doing a few last minute things on the ole Chevelle and plan to get headed that way Friday around noon. It's only a 2 - 2 1/2 hour drive for me. Probably go to the Grand Run next weekend as well. Can't believe there isn't a thread going on already.
FLASHED Sep 7th, 09, 10:36 PM We used to go up but traffic became such a nightmare we just dont bother anymore.Besides the hotels charge way too much up there. Hope you have a good time.
Roberty Sep 7th, 09, 10:54 PM Do like I always do - stay in Gatlinburg. I'm staying at the Glenstone Lodge http://www.glenstonelodge.com/ in Gatlinburg for $90 a night poolside. It's downtown so you can easily walk everywhere in Gatlinburg and it doesn't take long to be in Pigeon Forge. You can even stay at the Grand Resort hotel http://www.grandresorthotel.com/ (the place that hosts the event) for $139 a night. I paid almost as much as the Glenstone this spring when I went to Chevellabration and that was at the Red Roof Inn in Goodlettsville. The Red Roof inn wan't very nice but the Glenstone is very nice with a big indoor pool and hot tub area.
Jas69 Sep 8th, 09, 2:52 PM Gonna try and make the Grand. Yes, traffic is awful and to be honest have not went to either in a very long time. I have stayed at the Glenstone several times and I do recomend it. I don't know that I would stay there for either rod run but thats just me. I usually stay in Pigeon Forge during the shows. Hopefully we will have good weather!
SPARK69 Sep 8th, 09, 4:18 PM im going to shades of the past fri, sat and sun and going to the rod run tuesday -sunday!! im bringing my 67 chevelle ss....
Roberty Sep 8th, 09, 4:24 PM The weather forcast this weekend doesn't look too bad. High around 80 and slight chance of rain with partly cloudy skies. Last year was miserable hot around 90.
Roberty Sep 8th, 09, 4:38 PM Anyone know what vendors are going to be selling parts this year? I know that Ausleys Chevelle is going to be there but other than them I don't know for sure. My cousin is needing a couple of things for his '69 Camaro.
RS3SDL2MG Sep 8th, 09, 6:56 PM I used to stay in gatlinburg about 20 year's ago when we first started going , but now I stay right in pigeon forge , the hotel is high but staying up in gatlinburg is like going to see a movie with a blind fold on ,
I will be there at the shades run wed thru sun , gonna park my 67 camaro beside the street at the hotel on wed pull up a lawn chair and not move it till we leave sun morning ,
as for the grand run it don't exist anymore used to be a full night of hotrod's fri sat but now it is just idiot's throwing bead's out of mini van's at dittsy females ,
hpsherlin Sep 9th, 09, 10:29 AM We rode the Harley over the mountain on Monday and rode back last night.
Celebrated our 24th anniversary. Got a room for $29.00 hehehe but prices will skyrocket starting later in the week.
Looked at quite a few cars. Some are reasonably priced and some are outrageous.
Saw a 66 project SS for 9500. A brandywine 66 SS clone (I think it was the same car I saw locally a while back) for 45K, a black 67 Malibu for 32.5K, a black 67SS clone for 29.5K, two 69's for upper 20K, a 56 Chevy convert for 99.5K, a 57 Chevy convert for 99.5K, etc.
Outrageous prices. I told the wife I should take mine and put a huge price on it.......nawww. Much nicer than any of the Chevelle's I looked at.
Also saw some reasonably priced 71 Camaro's that were very nice drivers for 12K. A 78 Z28 for 10K.
Two 40 Chryslers....side by side....one read nice two tone for 20K and a red one beside it for 10.5K. The owners said they wanted to sell theirs and agreed some prices were out of this world.
Lots of brand new paint jobs too. Scary.
We love to ride to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge but too crowded during the Grand Run.
It is quite a spectacle.
Roberty Sep 10th, 09, 10:00 PM I've spent the last few days getting my Chevelle ready for the trip up to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. I've only it up and running for the last two weeks after finally getting the new 454 and Muncie in it so there have been a lot of little things to attend to after it sitting for a few years. Had some carb problems, the turn signal switch had to be changed (that was yesterday afternoons project), had a couple of wiring issues, the wiper motor died on me, new door panels installed, etc... but I believe I finally have it ready to roll. :beers: Hope to hit the road around noon tomorrow for the trip up. If any of you see a red '71 Chevelle convertible on the side of 411 broken down stop and help a brother out. ;)
chevele72 Sep 11th, 09, 3:55 PM We went up in between hurricanes back in '04. We stayed at the Grand Hotel, at the time the place was in bad shape. We didn't really know where to stay so that worked, now my brother and sister live near by. The only good part was the Grand had cameras on site so I could see the car from the room on the tv. (closed circuit I guess) Also ended up being registered in the show since we stayed there and won top 25. Wasn't our intention but it made it worth the trip. Then back home to another storm. Have been to a few since then but on the Harleys instead. It's fun cruising your car and bikes around the mountains, after all the long straight roads here!

Roberty Sep 13th, 09, 4:30 PM Just got back home from the Shades of the Past and we had a blast. The traffic was fun as usual but there was a big turn-out of people and cars. This was my first trip to the Shades weekend - I usually go on the Grand Run weekend. There were 2100 cars at the show!! That was what one of the guys working the show told us. Unbelievable!
My Chevelle ran great all weekend and the trip both ways was great with some very nice weather. I forgot to put sun screen on my face on the trip home today and I about got burned up with the top down. Great weekend all around. :beers:
Roberty Sep 14th, 09, 10:36 PM Here's a picture my wife took as we were heading out. We had to stop at Walgreens for the wifey to pick up something to take on the trip when she snapped this.
