I've looked at the database and read a million old post. Looking for update from those with experience. I've got Weld Pro Star's 15X8 and 15X5 wheels. On just a few outings I've managed to nearly destroy the Hooker 2" Comp headers by scraping the ground. I need larger front tires asap. Mine are only about 25-1/4" tall and the headers hang real low. Need help in selecting all tires. I am leaning towards the MT ET Street Radial 295/65R-15 (almost 30" tall) for the rear and whatever you reccomend for the front. Not sure what springs are on the car. It has Koni 90/10 shocks on the front and I know I need to replace the air shocks on the rear. Thanks, in advance for your time. :beers:

I just put this tire on my 70. Its a Kelly SA-4 radial to go with your rear radials, if thats your plan. Its about the same size as a Mickey Thompson 28x7.50x15 Sportsman front. Its size is 205/75r15. Keep in mind, its speed rating is only 118 mph, but I imagine thats meant for sustained mph. Only about $50 and made in the USA.

Heres a pic that may give you an idea of of how the car sits. I have the 295/65x15 MT Street radials on the back too.

i've recently changed from a 206/60x15 tire to a 215/65x15 it fills the wheel well better and appeared to be about 1.5"-taller overall than my previous tires.
if you are not worried about high (110+mph) sustained speed and cornering there are the cookie cutter 165x15 volkswagon style tires.
they are tall about 26.5"-tall.
i also found some BFG tires in the 185/75x15 size range not too long ago (not sure of exact size) on tirerack.com...

Vince, do you run the 295/65 -15 MT ET Street radials on the rear? I'm concerned because I see them going into the '70 - '72's but not much on the '68 -'69. I need to first know they will work and then I can go ahead and order the front tires. Need those on now. Will have to wait a bit for the rears.

Really need some input on the 295/65R-15. Particularly, 8" -vs- 10" wheel fitment. I have 8" wheels. MT's website suggest 8-10 wheel. However some feedback here is that for max traction, the 10" is needed. I am wanting to put new front tires on asap but am holding off until I get some feedback on the rear tire selection. With 2" difference in height between the 295/65 and my next option the 295/65, I really need to decide before matching the front. And to correct my original post, my fronts are 15" X 3.5". Thanks

i'm running the 275/60x15 mickey DR
i recall seeing some posts from another member or two about running the 295/65x15 tires,
the rims needed to be the 15x10x5.5''-back space to shoehorn these big tires under the wheel-well, seems like either trimming or rolling the fender lip was needed to prevent gouging/scraping the tire from axle movement on corners. also i would recommend smoothing the inner fender well edge near the frame at the rear of the tire. to keep from contacting the tire as it goes thru it's movement side to side and up/down in the wheel-well. there are some spot welds that may have left some rough edges/splatters on the frame rail that should also be smoothed to prevent damage to the tire sidewall.
if you do a search on the tire size you should come up with some photo's of 69/68-cars with the tires installed.... :)

I got a 29x12.5 on my 68 chevelle. Its got a 15x10 with 5.5 backspace and all i had to do was roll the lip a little bit and now there plenty of room.

I put P205/75R-15's (about 27" tall) on the front today. I wanted to go taller, but with a 3.5" wheel, I think this was the limit. I had a P215/75 mounted up, but it just looked too wide for the wheel, so I stayed with the 205's. Tire I used was a Douglas from Wal-Mart @ $60.00. One of the few tires I could find without white wall or letters. Thanks all
