Are Flywheels dated like blocks are? Does someone restoring a valuable car bother with having the correct dates on EVERYTHING or just block, heads etc. I ask because I have a 454 flywheel that I think is dated January 1970. I say think because I don't know if the numbers I see are the date or something else. Just curious.

I know purists who want every component with the correct part number and the "right" date code. Right being defined as predating the engine/car build by a few days to a few months.

What is the casting number on the flywheel?

I will have to look I am not home right now. I do know it has the counterweight and my father told me it was from a 454.He had it for years and he also had a 1970 454 sitting in the garage as well so I assume he is correct.Although the 512 block he had is dated L 19 9 so I guess this flywheel (A 9 70) could not be original to that engine.... I will look at the casting number tomorrow.

The casting number on the flywheel is 3963538 and the date is A 9 70

What is it ? I'm 99.9% sure it's a 454 but I don't know how to tell the difference between the 454 and the 400

With that casting number I believe that to be an original flywheel for a 454.
They were used on LS5 and LS6 engines.
