I would just like to know why someone would have put a 327 in place of a bbc
SteelChevelle/ Sep 5th, 09, 11:35 PM Maybe they don't like BBC. My dad used to race back in the 70s, and hated 396s because he said the bottom ends never held together on the circle tracks.
mmurphy77 Sep 5th, 09, 11:41 PM I remember in the late 70s/early 80s EVERY car you'd see with Big Block emblems had a SBC in it and we were always so disappointed.
raugusti Sep 6th, 09, 12:22 AM I think sometimes it has to do with what someone has on hand. I went to look at a '69 Malibu Convertible many years ago, one of it's many problems was that it had an early '60s 348 stuffed in place of the the long gone 350!

Bunz-T Sep 6th, 09, 5:06 AM At this price and in this condition what difference does it make anyway.
SS427Rick Sep 6th, 09, 6:38 AM Years ago I knew a guy who replaced his worn LS-5 454 in a 70SS/4-speed with a roller cammed 355 with an old Edelbrock 3x2 intake. We thought it was pretty cool back then. Same guy offered me a 70 SS396 with a L-72 427/T-400 for $2000. I didn't have the cash.
704EVER Sep 6th, 09, 7:47 AM I know a few guys that ripped BBs out of their Chevelles and put small blocks in during the Arab oil embargo.

Yes, I know of several friends that did the same. Pulled the big blocks and dropped in small blocks. Looking for better mileage. Of course the original engines were lost, and cars were ultimately sold.
They weren't thinking of any future values back then, just trying to start families and survive. These were daily drivers then.
Lionel-n-Chevelles Sep 6th, 09, 8:35 AM When I was a kid in the early 70s, my neighbor across the street had a 1969 Camaro SS.
The car was black with a 396/375 and 4 Speed. Frank was looking for better gas mileage because of the Arab Oil Embargo and a shop did the swap. The deal was, the shop supplied and installed the 350 for the 396. The car was stolen in the early 80s and was never found.

Some of them still are. :)
Chicken Coupe Sep 6th, 09, 3:28 PM Ah yes the oil embargo days.
Friend #1 took the L-88 out of a 70 1/2 Baldwin Motion Camaro, swapped that motor for a stock crate 350, then sold the car.
Friend #2 took a BE-U-T-FUL 65 327 Corvette, and hacked it up by yanking the sm block and installing an in-line 6, 2:73 rear gears, and one of those special Corvette extended range gas tanks so he could get to school and back.
Pretty sure the motor and car were separated for eternity.
Oh the travesty. If we only had known then what we know now.
