I sprayed the under side of my fenders, hood, trunk lid door jams and fire wall today. Is this product really hard to get to lay down flat?I had to turn my fan control knob all the way in and use alot of air to get the best results. The fan spray was about the size of an aluminum can bottom. If I tried to go bigger it would show alot of little drops and not lay flat.I'm using a Devilbiss starting line gun with a 1.8 tip. This wasn't a bad set up for spraying into the tight areas but when it came to the large flat areas it just took way to long.I did use reducer in the mix.Any sugestions would be appreiciated. I really don't want to spend all day spraying the whole body when it comes to that stage:noway:.

Sounds like the material flow knob needs to be out a little more. Also might want to try using a 2.0 mil tip.

You can add more reducer to thin it out for larger panels. Use a slower reducer and it should flow out. Down side to using more reducer....takes more coats for the same amount of build, so you should limit your number of coats to 3 or 4 so that you don't trap solvents under the primer.

What tip would be recommended for this?

Our devilbiss primer gun has a 1.4 tip and sprays perfect...havent had a problem yet...there are adjustments but it works great

I had mixed 4 parts primer 1 part activator and 1 part reducer seemed pretty thin to me.When I tried to adjust for more flow I got larger dots and when I got full coverage it would run.I don't know if I can get a 2.0 tip for my hvlp I'll have to check eastwood I bought the $200 3 gun kit.I wouldn't be surprised if additional tips are not available for the bargin guns.

A larger tip gun with poor atomizing capabilities will spray with the results you are seeing. Add too low air pressure and it's worse yet. Exaggerate the situation and use a rocker shultz gun as a comparison. It achieves it's texture with it's atomization design.
This is why a SATA or Iwata sprays so nicely, it has superior atomization design and performance.

I so agree with Scott on the Iwata or Sata. I shoot topcoats only with my Iwata 400lph, but purchased a harbor freight 1.7 primer gun and couldn't be happier with it. It cost maybe $40 and I really don't give a rip about treating it nicely because of the price. I do clean it well though and I shoot K36 high build and polyesther primer regularly with this gun. It atomizes well and has lasted through 5 cars so far and going strong.

While I never used the starting line gun I've not had any problems with
the Devilbiss guns except their air hogs. I use a Millennium gun with 1.4
tip and flows very well. I've owned over 11 of Devilbiss guns and they
all work well. If that gun has a cap make sure the breather hole is clear.

I checked the vent hole in the cap often and it was open.Read alot of posts on hear to remind myself to keep checking it.Occasionally it would close off when the primer would touch it but would pull it back through when spraying .Eventually it would seal shut but I would open it up.I also had issues with the primer collecting on the tip of the gun clogging the air holes.I guess I wasn't using enough air to keep them clean. But when I hit the trigger it would let out a big blast of air. Also got lots of over spray.

Any gun will require cleanliness to perform properly. This includes proper sealing of the machined mating surfaces. And teflon seals if so equipped. While I do not own one I have sprayed heavy and thin viscosity primers with a Starting Line 1.4 or 1.8 with no problems. Perhaps one or a combination of factors is giving you grief.

Scott, I use the same gun with a 1.5 tip for Nason 2K primer without a problem, unless I'm interrupted between coats and the primer starts setting up in the gun. I think that you should be able to thin your primer a bit more and like Chuck says, make sure the vent hole is not plugging up on you (fill the gun a little less). Also maybe turn up your pressure and/or open up the fluid valve some.

This was the second time using the new gun. I sprayed one coat of nason epoxy the week before and cleaned the gun thouroghly.Maybe another part of reducer is needed. Thanks for the help!!!!

This MIGHT be the problem- a Loooong time ago I had similar problem with high build- it just wasn't properly mixed. Make sure you mix it really well-like pour it from one container to another so it really mixes well, or else the lower primer material is really thicker and wont layout and sprays dry....
