Candy, In all seriousness I think the lifters are bleeding down, the big question is why. The only thing I can think of if the oil pressure's ok is that you may have a clogged oil passage someplace. What's the motor's history?

EdCarpenter
Sep 7th, 09, 9:32 AM
If the lifters have some age they can loose pressure. The seals deteriorate over time and result in bleed down. I'm guessing there are only a couple that are exibiting this.

As long as they stop chattering in the short amount of time you discribed you are OK. If the tapping continues after the warm up period you should consider pulling the intake and valve covers and replacing the lifters! Sounds like a neat car. You should post some pictures for the "all original crowd" (like me) to look at.

Thanks Guys! Thte car has 50,000 original miles. The engine has never been touched, other than for regular up keep. I don't think the valve covers have ever been off. The car has sat for 4-5 months at a time in a garage through it's life. I think there is some deterioration with all the sitting it's done. :)

I think this is what's going on here. The WORST thing that you can do for an engine is to let it sit. They need exercise.

In light of all the banter posts here......

Next time the oil needs to be changed, pour a half quart of transmission fluid into the engine. It's a high detergent oil that might help clean up the oil passages in the engine and cure the lifter tap it has  After adding the trans fluid, take it out for a ride so it gets up to operating temperature, then change the oil.

Well guys, My name's Candy, I'm 27 and I'm in Seabrook. I went to school for marketing. Took the class for four years and got my degree. I also got my degree in business management. I work for a small law firm, and do dancing on the side. My '70 Malibu was givin to me by my grandfather. It's a real nice car. I've done some interior work to it. I'm doing most of it myself so I can learn. :)

Same here, except I was MIS, I'm 31 now and run my own IT firm here in CT. Built my ;64 from the ground up as a basket case. I love a girl that is willing to get dirty working :D

Hi Candy,
With every Oil Change, my Dad always added 1 Quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to 5 Quarts of Oil. Every car he owned went past 100,000 miles. My Father In Law does the same and is the original owner of a 1984 Camaro. The Camaro has 560,000 Original miles. The Driver's Side Cylinder Head Gasket went at about 375,000 miles. When the top half of the motor was disassembled to replace both head gaskets, there was no sludge. The motor was clean as a whistle. Despite the high mileage, the car still runs smooth and is very quiet. I recommend that you add 1 Quart of Marvel Mystery Oil whenever you change the oil. Those noisy lifters will quiet right down.
