Hi guys. I'm doing a rebuild on my 70 TH400 and I need help quick. I really want to get this thing back in this weekend. I removed the valves from the valve body to clean and I laid out the parts the same way they came out. I'm 98% sure this valve and spring came out in a different order than the way that my rebuild book shows that they should have been. This is how they came out.

The book How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission, by Ron Sessions, shows the spring should be on the right and reinstall first, and then the valve. Which is correct?

Also, there is a little cone shaped filter that I didn't see until it hit my foot, while I was blowing the degreaser out of the valve body. Where does it belong? Thanks!

Dan.

That's the accumulator valve.
Install a spring (might need to find a spring, usually smaller diameter) first and then the valve, it will firm up the 1-2 shift.
It probably came apart the way you have it pictured.

The filter was probably a governor filter in the case, leave it out. The first time you have one get partially plugged up, you'll never install another one...PITA to diagnose.

I've owned the car about 16 months and it wasn't driveable when I got it. I've driven it a little, just a couple weeks ago. I know a PO had at least had the pan off before. I don't have any other info about what he may have done in there. The car would shudder as it shifted to 2nd, unless I was very light on the pedal at shift time.

I'm installing a B&M rebuild kit and the shift improver kit.

I had already cleaned up the case and only had the valve body in my hand when the filter hit my foot. I had already removed the valves from the VB. I thought it must have been in one of the ports for the governor tubes. Thank you for the help! :beers: :D
