: Who has a Power Steering Cooler?

I'm planning on re-doing the box and pump AGAIN (thanks a lot Cardone) and wanted to see who has a PS cooler and where did you mount it. I have a '70 with stock fan/shroud and A/C. There's only one 'easy' spot to mount one that's below the PS reservoir's high fluid mark - and that's on the radiator next to the shroud. Found a Tru-Cool stacked plate design (Dana is the OEM) that sould fit nicely and go in without much fuss.

I'm installing a Lee 670 12.7:1 steering box, rag-joint, & lee rebuilt PS Pump.

With this $$$ investment, I'm thinking of trying to cool it down some & protect it.

I'm thinking of using about 5' of coiled up return hose & putting an Earls remote oil filter in the return line. I have space on front of frame forward of steering gear box. This extra surface area & PS fluid volume, will reduce the temp. some.

I have a cute little IR gun looking tool for getting instant temp. readings of stuff, (don't work for shinny metal surfaces)

The Tru-Cool B7B is one of them I had in mind: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/2554/TRU_Cool_Oil_Coolers

The problem (or inconvenience for me) of the Earl's Temp-A-Cure models are the orientation of the mounts

The TruCool can use those zip-strips to mount to your existing radiator. It also has cheaper 1/2 NPTF threads and is a stack plate design. Earl's is a slightly different plate & fin design, although I don't know how much of a big deal that is.

you could do like the oems did and just loop a hardline under the radiator support. i don't know how much difference it makes, but every Caprice cop car i've had has had a cooler like that. most GM fwd cars have this setup, as well.

I was thinking of using this one from autozone for $20.

Look up steering components for a 85' camaro. P/N is 911009.

Explain what happened to the cardone pump? I plan on running one from a mid-80's C30 with hydroboost. Hydroboost will come later and this one has 2 returns. It will also match port style with GC box.

Finned coolers are very efficient -- as long as they have a good flow of air available. If you were to really map underhood airflow, you might be very surprised as to where there is air actually flowing. There isn't any one location because of the vast differences in grill work, fender wells, engine location, etc.

The "trombone" type 3/8 diameter tube coolers that extend back and forth under the radiator support seem to be a relatively common location for production coolers. Trombone coolers are much cheaper than brazed finned coolers. That is another reason that you see so many of them.

One of the more interesting coolers was found on some early Ford Taurus vehicles. They used about a 1/2 inch diameter trombone tube that ran under the radiator. That tube had a lot more surface area than a typical 3/8 OD tube.

Bochnak - The Cardone pump and gear were installed last year. The box now has 1/8th turn play in it. It's all going back. Hopefully by the end of this month, I will make a post on the new PS system I am having made.

Here's where I'm thinking of installing the cooler:

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=23148&stc=1&d=1252160216

The long sheet of paper represents the cooling areas of the TruCool (2.75x11) and the other is a 4x6 PS cooler seen here http://www.bakerprecision.com/trucool.htm I know the location is not optimal, but figure the stacked-plate design would be helpful. I've also read where you don't want the cooler mounted any higher than the PS reservoir because of drainback overflowing the reservoir. I suppose you could put a checkvalve into the inlet line to help prevent that.

Is the pump reservoir you are talking about?

RockAuto #36517065. I was wondering if that Hydroboost return line would clear the small block PS bracket, but looks like it would. This is good to know for anybody looking to do a HB install w/o the tee'ed return line. Where can I source the Delphi P# for this reservoir, JIML82?

Back to the cooler and some questions for JIML82: 1.) What is the PSI of the return line? 2.) There are a couple of coolers that could fit easier with some 3/8" 90-degree molded rubber elbows. Is there such a PS-rated piece out there? Problem I'm having is the barbs all seem to end up pointing the wrong direction.

Word of advice guys...

There is a reason the most commonly seen OEM power steering cooler is of a bent-tube type and not a flat plate type.

According to Tom Lee of Lee power steering, power steering pump harmonics will eventually fatigue a flat-plate style cooler and cause a crack. Tube-style coolers resist the pulsations and harmonics much better.

FYI, I used a dual pass bent-tube and fin cooler and stuck it in between the intercooler and radiator. Picture here, cooler on the right side. (http://home.comcast.net/~procharged69/pictures/intercooler/icinstall8.jpg)

Before I did one of those tubing loops (replace a lot of rotted ones around here) I'd grab a PS cooler in the boneyard. Very common, compact tube and fin coolers easy to come by. I sometimes find new ones at swap meets for cheap money also. jim.

Gokou That looks like the Perma-Cool 1009 (w/ -6 AN fittings). I called Perma-Cool tech and they said the double pass - like the 1.5" thick 1200 or 1210 was more efficient than the 4-pass, but again, it comes down to what will fit.

So the stack plate or plate & fin designs are not recommended for power steering applications due to pump pulsations?

I was thinking of the following apps:

85 t type cardone 208721

I have no idea whether these will clear or not. I do like the larger reservoir size to hold more fluid.

These will require a new pulley from a 85' camaro Dorman 300122.

I’m assuming that your pump failed due to heat?

BTW, the truck pump is easier to find than the t type pump at autozone...etc.

Here is a larger one at autozone for $30, p/n 911401

Putting it behind the radiator puts it in the hot (used) air.

I found an old somewhat beat up used one that I already had, like the one from autozone above, p/n 911401

Now the problem is: where to mount it so that it will get air flow?

I have no room in front of my radiator, as I have a tranny cooler on the pasenger side & a B&M motor oil cooler on the drivers side.

Also my DIY radiator shroud covers the entire engine side of my radiator except for the 16" electric fan in the center.

Here is an update (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=293826)on this thread. I got the B7B.
