: Unbleedable brakes?

Ok this isn't chevelle related persay, but applies to most GM cars and trucks.

I tried to bleed the back brakes on my 86 S10 Blazer yesterday. After a quart of brake fluid I am still getting bubbles. I have never had this problem before. I don't mean a few bubbles, awhole bunch. I have the plunger pressed on the metering valve. Any ideas?

The fronts are perfect. The back brakes really suck and won't lock up on ice. Should I try bleeding the master cylinder and start from scratch? Also I am getting fluid squirting from from the front brake pickup in the back bowl of the fluid resevoir when I pump the brakes. I don't think this is normal.

Thanks for any help
Steve

Steve,

Your '86 might have a quick take up MC which has a third high volume/low pressure pistion. I have never used one, but I have read about them. The QTU cylinder is very slow to fill and so you need to pause a lengthy time between brake pedal pumps to let the QTU cylinder fill completely.

Ask andrewb70 about this. He has this type of MC on his GTO. He might be able to shed some light on the problem.

Also, you might be better off power bleeding them with air pressure.

I think I am just gonna take it in and get a free brake inspection. My rear drums are frozen to the axels, so they'll have to pull them to inspect everything.

I did not have too much trouble bleeding my s10 MC. I had a friend help, and we just went very slowly. It took a very long time. I went through several quarts of fluid. I used a clear catch can and recicled the fluid that came out of the bleeders. I went around the car half a dozen times, but eventually there were absolutely no bubbles that came out. Once I could pump the brakes 3 times with no bubbles, I called it good. You have to wait about 30 seconds between pump to allow the reservour to fill up. Hope that helps.

Did you have any problems with the cylinder spiting fluid out while pumping? How many quarts is a few?

Thanks

Andrew,
Did you use the reservoir for the S10?? Or did you use something else?

Its hard to say for sure, but I would guess I went through 3 quarts all together. I just had a clear tube that I put on the bleeds and caught the fluid in a clear 1 liter water bottle. I had no problem with any fluid shooting out the top. I made sure my helper pushed the pedal slowly and steadily.

I used the reservour that came with the S-10 MC. I was not able to locate an aluminum bodied MC. I got mine from Napa and it was a raybestos unit.

Here are some pics.

How about it spiting fuild out, while pumping pedal? Think mine's gone bad.

Thanks

Anybody know about cylinders spitting fluid with the cap off while bleeding? It's coming from the front brake pick up. I had the same thing happen on a 82 Malibu Wagon, but brakes are perfect so i didn't think any thing of it.

Thanks

Yes Steve I have had fluid spit out the top many times on several different MC when bleeding them. I wouldn't worry about that.

Have you guys tryed to Vacuum bleed your brakes? I have Mityvac that you connect at the wheel cylinder(or caliper)and its real easy don't have to pump the pedal! www.mityvac.com (http://www.mityvac.com)
I got my set from www.everythingcorvette.com (http://www.everythingcorvette.com) on sale this month $47. does alot of other stuff like testing vaccum componets.ect...check it out!

I was thinking of trying to get a vac pump and bleeding them. But I still shouldn't have a ton of air when bleeding them the old way.

I think I might have been getting air in the line at the top of the bleeder hose. I had to use vise grips on the bleeder screw because of GM's retarded wheel cylinder design. I am gonna make a socket wrench to get at it that will hold the hose real tight.
