Keep in mind that your front brakes do about 70% of the stopping of your car. Therefore unless you want some "bling bling" factor in your car, like the looks of rear discs and just have to have them I would look into some better pads up front etc. to stop your ride a little bit better.

Once you swap to rear discs you have to start swapping out master cylinders, proportioning valves, brake lines & e-brake cables. Sure there are kits out there, but IMO they are a rip off. Nothing more than GM sourced parts that can be bought for cheaper directly over the counter.

Good luck with your decision.

Do you have an adjustable porportioning valve instead of factory stuff. You could apply some more pressure to the drums to help stopping and get some better shoes. Larger diameter wheel cyliders are also available same with the bore on the master cylinder to help you come to a halt faster.

I'm going to rear discs but I'm a street 99% of the time and want the go and who.

I'm going to try and go with lt1 f-body (93-97) rear brakes, and forego the e-brake altogether for now. From what I've heard, and what it looks like, the backing plates will bolt right on, and it should be basically a 'bolt on' swap other than some brake line finagling.

Just an FYI for you and the other guys on here. R.J. (username airrj) has a '93-'97 F-body setup that is complete off a '94 Z28. It includes everything and for the price he's asking I would snag it up quick!! But I'm unemployed at the moment :(

E-mail me at diels1@aol.com if you want to get in touch with him.

Take care guys!

Joe has some good Info in his post. Balance in the brakeing is important. You can install the larger rear drums like came on the 77 El Camino and keep the same master cylinder and have a parking brake for a lot less money.
Ever wonder why they had a need to put Anti-Lock brakes on the rear of the newer cars?

I mocked up this setup on my rearend (when it was out of the car), and everything bolted up fine, except the parking brake cable... RJ and others (BC?) knotched the shock bracket on the rearend to clear the cable... My 66 rear end is narrower, and therefore the "Knotch" needs to be much bigger, so I haven't installed them yet...

That and my aftermarket 15-inch rally wheels don't fit (whereas stock GM rallys would make it with minor clearancing...)...

Anybody know if the F-body rear brakes can be used without the parking brake? (The I could think about FOFIDYFO's yoke brake...)... I know the Caddy/TA swap needs to have a operating parking brake (I have one of those setups too...), so I am not sure if the F-body needs it...

Joe, thanks for the heads up. I already have my backing plates though, and I'm just going to buy new calipers and rotors, they're cheap, compared to Baer or other aftermarket kits.

I intend on going with the Baer 13" front kit, I havn't worked out all the details about brake lines and such though. That's going to be a pain.
