: Any One Get Paid By Work On a Debit Card???
PaPa Johns 77 Aug 31st, 09, 5:26 PM My wife just got informed that starting on the next pay cycle that they will no longer get a paper check. That instead they will get a WalMart Mastercard Debit card.
The only way around that is to go direct deposit I guess.
Anyone elses place of work go to this type of pay system?
Yelcamino Aug 31st, 09, 5:29 PM I recommend going with direct deposit. I've been doing it for over 20 years and never had a problem.
71Avido Aug 31st, 09, 5:32 PM Second on that direct deposit, its the best thing about getting paid next to the money itself of course.
jfkheat Aug 31st, 09, 5:33 PM Does she work for Walmart? I would check into the legalities of this. I would do the direct deposit before letting this happen.

Rob G Aug 31st, 09, 5:34 PM No, and what a crock of cow dung. We just had an article in our news today about how welfare/food stamps/food assistance are issued in forms of debit cards with restrictions like no ciggerettes, alcohol, etc.
Wasn't there a law that you can require your employer to pay you in cash at the end of the day? I think most of them got around this by just firing the employee seeing if as an "at-will employment" or something like that.

Your last statement is pretty much right on, like it or leave!
I know every payday when she would cash her check at the money center they tried to push this card. Same thing every time you shop there.
Guess they are finding a way to make the associates take it. Next they will probably try and drop direct deposit too.
It says free access (at WM and Sams) so I'd venture that there is a fee every time you use it elsewhere and every time you draw out cash.
tunes Aug 31st, 09, 5:45 PM I certainly wouldn't want the Wal Mart debit card.

.
Are you saying that you disagree with the above?
Im not sure if your objecting that you cannot buy alcohol and cigs with your TAX PAYER PROVIDED FOOD assistance money.
They're arent "vice" stamps. If they were i'd be on welfare with a TON of hookers at my house eating cheetos, washing it down with malt liquor and shooting dice.
grandsport Aug 31st, 09, 5:50 PM Will the bank accept a Walmart card for a mortgage payment? I don't think so.:noway:
PaPa Johns 77 Aug 31st, 09, 5:50 PM Here welfare, food stamp and unemployment are all paid on a debit card.
Alan Aug 31st, 09, 5:51 PM direct deposit.
How does Wal Mart expect a person to pay a water bill, energy bill, mortgage (if a person has one), rent, credit card bill or similar bills with a Debit Card? How do you get CASH? Take a cash advance and get bent over with fees?
Add that pay method to the list of "stupid ideas in the technology era".
mr 4 speed Aug 31st, 09, 5:52 PM I prefer cash :D

I'm outraged just as you are!

jfkheat Aug 31st, 09, 6:16 PM Just get the debt card and immediately go to the ATM inside the WalMart and take out cash. Of course, knowing how Walmart operated, there will be some kind of restrictions on doing that.

PaPa Johns 77 Aug 31st, 09, 6:18 PM direct deposit.

That was what I pointed out to the wife. You can use it anywhere to pay but the only place you can do a fee free transaction is at WM or Sams!
The paper she got says it all.
Aaron Thomas Aug 31st, 09, 6:54 PM Just get the debt card and immediately go to the ATM inside the WalMart and take out cash. Of course, knowing how Walmart operated, there will be some kind of restrictions on doing that.

Ususally ATM's will only let you ake out $300 max a day or so, so I dunno if that would work.
RAMBO Aug 31st, 09, 6:57 PM they are just trying to force the employees to just it at wallmart. With restrictions on how much cash can be taken out a day, it will force people to come back day after day.
I don't understand why anyone would NOT do the direct deposit, especially when confronted with this kind of BS
depley Aug 31st, 09, 7:25 PM direct deposit, most banks will give you your online banking stuff and checking account for free if you have direct deposit. Wife has had direct deposit for several years, never a problem.
Removed Aug 31st, 09, 9:18 PM Here welfare, food stamp and unemployment are all paid on a debit card.
In Texas unemployment is paid by a debit card.
packer_rich Aug 31st, 09, 9:35 PM I'm in Illinois and when I was on unemployment I got it on a debit card. I took it to the bank teller and they would cash it or deposit into my account. The problem would be if you wanted to withdraw your money at the wallymart ATM you couldn't get it all out. The ATM's around here are all in $20 increments.
PaPa Johns 77 Aug 31st, 09, 10:22 PM We are going to hve her check direct deposited into our checking account. They can shove the card where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned!
Our bank said we would get a free checing account with free checks and a debit card and online banking if I have my SS check direct deposited too!
Alan F Aug 31st, 09, 10:37 PM I am one of those evil employers. I have a good sized 'blue collar' workforce from coast to coast. After numerous scams with checks and to limit liability, I did the same thing. I pay my people only by direct deposit or Visa check card. Most of my employees that don't have bank accounts absolutely love it. They were used to paying exhorbitant fees to check cashing agencies and I actually saved them money.
I also have an excellent relationship with my bank and they have offered all of my employees no fee bank accounts. Unfortunately some people, for whatever reason, don't want a bank account.
67 GTO Sep 1st, 09, 2:09 AM If you want to be a source of grief for someone... Had a direct deposit account, but after getting suspended/fired I closed that account. Got the job back, but they couldn't deposit anything to a closed account so they issued a paycheck. Eventually, after 3-4 months, they got quite upset (condition of employment) and insisted on a new account number. I just waited until they figured it out. :D
IMO, it was much more gratifying to see a paycheck than a simple account balance.

Who, other than illegals and those that may be hiding from wage garnishing (dead beat dads, for example) doesnt have a bank account in this day and age? Must be close to the border in Texas.

It would really suprise you how many people with nothing to hide that don't have bank accounts.

Too late, I am already surprised. :D
Just roll around with a couple of grand in your pocket, 20K in the mattress?
I call these people robbery victims. Panicked 911 callers. Home invasion marks.
So you do have plenty to hide - your money and the fact that you dont have a bank account. ;)
Although I guess a pile of debit cards is better than a pile of cash laying around. Much easier to stash into those fake bottles and cans where the bottom unscrews.
Motorhead62 Sep 1st, 09, 3:34 PM I recommend going with direct deposit. I've been doing it for over 20 years and never had a problem.
same here.
Direct Deposit is the only way to go. :D
Randy Mosier Sep 1st, 09, 4:44 PM Same here. Texas Workforce Commission issues debit cards now for unemployment payments.
1969ProStreet Sep 1st, 09, 8:09 PM ...........I told the wife we will just do direct to our bank and leave it at that!
Wise choice .

Importtech Sep 1st, 09, 8:45 PM I know alot of people like it but personally I hate direct depost. However my new employer ONLY pays via direct deposit. It actually creates a headache for me since we don't normally put my paycheck in our checking account and hadn't for 20 years... Never heard of the debit card deal though.

I get my disability that way, but don't do banking online

That's actually what mine is SSD.
Alan F Sep 2nd, 09, 7:45 AM Who, other than illegals and those that may be hiding from wage garnishing (dead beat dads, for example) doesnt have a bank account in this day and age? Must be close to the border in Texas.
It is a different day. There's not much hiding from 'the man'. Not that I would, but can't hire illegal aliens. All my workforce MUST have TWIC cards, background checks, etc. DOCUMENTED for my customer base.
Most states now have requirements that you register all new employees with the state and they get those garnishment orders out before the first payrolls.
Most of my employees are out of town on paydays. They would gladly pay up to 10% to cash their checks. I don't understand why they shun banks either.
We give them one VISA card that has their name on it. It has a PIN and they can use it at any ATM. When we prepare payroll we load their net payroll (using the direct deposit function) onto that card.
mingles Sep 2nd, 09, 10:28 AM Direct deposit has been around long enough that people who mistrust banks so much really shouldn't be worried. Of course, I really don't know their underlying reasons for it anyway.
One thing I really like about direct deposit is when it comes to vacations or holidays. The money is there automatically and there is no need to worry about finding a cash station open. Mine arrives in the account late Thursday so its available right away on Friday morning. Good choice in direct deposit.
davoaz Sep 2nd, 09, 10:33 AM Here's something to think about. Like everyone says get DD and use a major bank card to do your transactions.
The state issued me a debit card for my unemployment benefits and I was using that. Since it was a NON major bank debit card everytime I went to buy gas for $20 or $30 I was getting jammed up on $100 holds for up to 5 days. I figured it out when I got my paltry $239 weekly UI payment went to Valero pumped $20 in the Chevelle and got a $100 hold then the next day pumped $30 into my truck and Safeway put a $75 hold on that. I had to suck wind for the next 5 days.
