: 3 point seat belt mounting
vferrizz Aug 30th, 09, 10:50 AM While I have the headliner out It is time to upgrade the seatbelts in my '66. I originally only had lap belts. I see some existing mounting holes in the roof but I am not sure which ones are for the seat belts? Also, is the roof strong enough or should there be some kind of additional metal plating up there?
Thanks.
morrisclassic Aug 30th, 09, 7:27 PM Vince,
GM started installing the roof mount in 1966. We sell 3 point retractable seat belts that will bolt directly into all of the factory mounting holes.
www.morrisclassicconcepts.com. Our seat belts are year and car specific. Our seat belts have powder coated stainless steel brackets and grade 8 bolts that are TIG welded to the reel housing and the top mount.,also we send grade 8 bolts for installation. You can have a chrome pushbutton or a chrome with the GM Mark of Excellence.Special order chrome, brushed aluminum or a bow tie lift latch in the 3 point set up/ Forgot to mention our top bracket has a lanyard that lets the seat belt hang lower so it is at a comfortable angle on your shoulder.

Do you have a selection of colors and do you make matching lap belts for the rear?

If you have a 66 made later in the model year you should have two 5/16 threaded holes built in to the roof just behind the front seats. They are roughly a couple of inches apart. You will use both of them. At least with the Morris seatbelts you will. I just started putting mine in yesterday. They look like really nice units.
Billy,
Just so you know the kit I bought from NPD didn't have the correct mounting bolts for the floor mounts. My 66 has 7/16-20 threaded holes. There weren't any 7/16-20 bolts in the kit.
jeffafd Aug 31st, 09, 8:15 PM Would I be correct assuming el Camino's also have the ceiling bolt hole for the 3 point belt?
I have a 68 that I want to convert over.
morrisclassic Aug 31st, 09, 9:12 PM All of the GM cars from 1966 have the top mount for the 3 point seatbelts.
We can get about any color anyone needs.
We will address the bolt size issue, Thank You, Billy

Yes they do, a two bolt set up at the roof...
I orders a set with GM on the buckle from MorrisClassic for my '71 Elcamino last Thursday they should be to me sometime this week maybe if the 14 in. center belt comes in tomorrow like Robin said...:)
The set up from them for a Elcamino is different from a Chevelle, just as Buckets and bench seat use a different set up...
I think Billy is the Guy I talked to on the phone about my '71 Camino, If so you said the center belt for the Bench seat may be 14 in. and After checking that out it was if I measured right...

jeffafd Aug 31st, 09, 9:37 PM Thanks for the responses John and Billy.
MorrisClassic has a nice setup.

Not so - my November '65 built '66 does not. Unfortunately ... :(
vferrizz Sep 1st, 09, 8:07 PM Thanks for all the replies. I will look for the mounting holes. There is a raised portion just above the rear window with a couple of small holes in it. Is it safe to say that is the spot?
Billy, I'll check out your site. I also need to figure out a way to mount 3-point seat belts in the rear seat. I have two boys (5 and 8) that want to go out and cruise for chicks and I need to keep them safe.
vferrizz Sep 1st, 09, 8:19 PM Well I just checked and I don't have the mounting holes. Question is can I just drill and tap a couple of holes? The metal there just seems a little thin so can I assume it is sturdy enough?

No. It needs reinforcements behind the mount. Those seatbelts would rip out of that sheetmetal in a NY minute. Not a good thing when you need them the most ... :noway:
I'm still trying to figure out how to do it on mine. I just don't feel all that safe with lap belts only after wearing 3-pointers all these years. :(
vferrizz Sep 1st, 09, 8:57 PM I wonder if anyone has a picture of a factory installed mount in a '66 or '67 that we can use as a reference? I'm sure something can be fabricated to make it safe?

Check your email, Vince. :D I don't know if it'll help much, but that's what it looks like.
vferrizz Sep 5th, 09, 8:40 AM Thanks Dave. That picture was quite helpful. My car looks just like the picture except for not having the holes. That kind of makes me think that I can just drill and tap the holes and I should be all set?
caminonut Sep 5th, 09, 10:47 AM The 3-point set in Black I ordered with the GM on the buckle from MorrisClassic for my '71 Elcamino came yesterday and you couldn't ask for a better looking set, very nice...
Now to find out if I ordered the right length 14 in. For the center of the Bench seat at the hump...?

My pleasure - I got the photo from PickSS originally. If it doesn't already have the holes, I'm pretty sure it's not reinforced back there. So, I don't think so, unfortunately. :(
vferrizz Sep 5th, 09, 3:47 PM I'm sure I can figure out something. I have access to a welder and some steel so it's time to use my imagination.

Can't be too difficult - post up what you do for everyone to see, if you don't mind.
morrisclassic Sep 5th, 09, 9:33 PM Thank You Everyone for the Compliments and buying our products. That is correct some 66 GM cars did not have the top mount, we don"t know the phase in date. Remember our seat belts are year and car specific and for
stock interior even though our seat belts do fit with other seats installed.
Thank You, Billy

X2... Mine has no reinforced area or threaded holes. Waa.
vferrizz Sep 6th, 09, 8:52 AM No problem. I am all for sharing information. I already have a couple of ideas.
