I had 1/2" studs installed in the 12 bolt I had built. I just thought that they would be stronger, and didn't think that they would be 3" long...what a pain in the arse now. Since I'm using the stock 71-72 SS wheels should I just cut the studs...or try to find an acorn style looooong lug nut?
Anyone who has "been there done that" care to share your solution? Thanks.

Why not just run an open acorn lugnut?

Hi Bill...I don't want to see/show the extra 2" of wheel stud threads. I could see where it wouldn't be an issue for a drag car but it just won't look right for my street ride.

 Yes, but mine were 7/16" x 3" studs with a larger than stock knurl.
Beware, If your knurl on the aftermarket studs is larger than stock you will have only two options that I am aware of.
In my case I elected to remove the axles and take them to a local machine shop and had them re-drilled (in between the old 4 3/4" bolt circle) for stock 7/16" studs.
Now I can remove the stock studs and re-install the aftermarket studs in the opposing holes (the first 4 3/4" bolt pattern with the larger than stock holes) if the need/desire arises.
IIRC, cost me about a $100.00., I am pretty sure you could simply cut them to the desired length if you didn't want to spend the $'s.

I understand.
I just thought you mentioned you were considering using (trying to find) extra long acorn lugnuts which isn't a factory "look", using the open nuts wouldn't be an issue.
Are these new studs threaded into the axle hubs or are they pressed? Just curious...
If the length is an issue, cut the studs down then.

I would just replace those studs with shorter 1/2" studs that are closer to stock length. Any parts store has or can get new studs in any length you want. Just take one of yours out and measure the thickness of it where it is pressed into the axle flange and find shorter studs with that same measurement and install them.

The studs are the screw in type. I did find some 2.5" long acorn style duplex lug nuts that would probably work, but those would probably be funny looking on the car. As of now, I'm leaning towards cutting them to length with the 3" pneumatic cut-off tool. Oh well, I've got nothing better to do while I'm waiting on the new upper control arms to get here...:)
