every car ive ever driven with power brakes and low vacuum the pedal would get hard. you would have to literally stand on the brake to stop.

if the brake pedal is going to the floor something is wrong!!!

check all wheel cylinders/calipers, hoses, and brake lines for leaks. have you been losing fluid? could be a worn out master cylinder. could also be air in the brake lines.

Why would he need a vacuum pump if the pedal is going to the floor?

Sounds like you are loosing pressure in your brake system. Perhaps a leak in one of the fittings, or the MC.

Did you just install this engine?

sounds like an internal pressure problem. maybe prop valve. also might check all the lines to see if one is swelling when perssure is applied and obviously check for external leaks. just a thought

Does the brake pedal feel firm when the car is standing still?

Basically right now, the pedal is very low (not quite to the floor) and will move about 3 inches to the floor, and they will stop me, just not the greatest. Im not using vacuum line from the booster to the carb (since I was in such a rush to get the car out on the street) could that be the problem? But like I said, I did have pedal pressure until about the first time I really got on it. then they went about to the floor! Still confused. Ill probably go bleed the brakes again and see if that helps.

You should hook up the vacuum line to the booster as well.

How about the little check valve in the line from the engine to the booster? You should be able to get one in the "HELP!" section of most any parts store.
