Hey Guys:
I finally got around to starting the conversion from drum to disk on the front of my 70 Chevelle however, I didn’t get very far before I ran into a problem.

I was able to separate the top ball joint from the spindle/steering knuckle but I can't figure out how to separate the spindle/steering knuckle from the lower ball joint.

I am afraid if I use a pickle fork on the lower ball joint I will damage the ball joint. I used a nut, bolt, and socket to get the top ball joint separated.

Can any of you guys tell me how to separate the lower ball/control arm from the spindle/steering knuckle. I really don’t want to put things back together to take it to a shop.

Thanks in advance

try putting the upper ball joint back in the spindle and put the nut on part way and then put your socket set up back in, when the nut on the top ball joint buts up against the inside of the spinde it'll start to push out the lower ball joint from the spindle

With all the money, time and effort you'll be putting into the conversion, the incremental cost of new ball joints (upper and lower) is definitely worth it - whether you break the knuckles and preserve the old ones undamaged, or not.

That's an awful lot of work to have to go back and put in new ones later!!

IMHO.
