: ebay disc brakes
joeyv69ragtop Feb 1st, 05, 12:32 AM Hello, I was wondering what some peoples opinions were on this ebay item i got recently. I did not have much time to research the parts before the end of the auction so i may have made the purchase rather hasty. I figure the calipers will need to be rebuilt/replaced. anything else i will need besides cleaning things up and bolting on a 69 malibu? Thanks,
-joe

elcamino72 Feb 1st, 05, 11:34 AM I would start by taking them apart. Take the rotors down and see if they'll turn. Also, check the calipers and see if they are in good working condition. If they are and move freely, try them, could be fine. New bearings, seals and races are a must, as are new pads. Looks like you got an alright deal ... shipping might be a few bucks, but I think you'll be happy.
joeyv69ragtop Feb 2nd, 05, 11:36 PM When you say to take the rotors down do you mean to grind off all the rust and bring them back to bare metal?
Bob Tiley Feb 2nd, 05, 11:57 PM He means take the rotors to a shop and have them cut on a lathe a few thousanths to clean them up and see if thery are warped.
They will also tell you if they are too thin.
I would trade in the master cylinder and calipers for rebuilt units at the auto parts store. Check around, my rebuilt calipers were $14 each and I think the master cylinder was $20 with trade in. For those kind of prices it's not worth cleaning them up.
joeyv69ragtop Feb 3rd, 05, 1:26 AM what kind of prices can I expect to have the rotors taken down? seems i could get new rotors around 20-30 each.
Herb Feb 3rd, 05, 11:16 AM rotors are cheap so that you replace them rather than have them turned.

joeyv69ragtop Feb 3rd, 05, 12:16 PM Thanks for your advice everyone. If I ever make it home to Buffalo to work on the car i'll let you know how the swap turns out.
WestyJ69chevelle Feb 3rd, 05, 5:05 PM well thats too bad.. I just sold the same set-up minus the calipers on ebay for 175... and everything except the spindles were new... a LOT better shape than that stuff..
69-CHVL Feb 3rd, 05, 8:54 PM Asolutely no offense here...but why on earth would you buy "wear" items? For cores or spindles I guess? I got 2 rotors from Autozone for 120.00, then 2 loaded calipers from Napa for 44.00/ea. They even had cheaper ones. I just think alot of this used stuff is not useable and you end up spending more in the end
joeyv69ragtop Feb 3rd, 05, 11:07 PM Vince,
I'd like to say that I got that stuff just for the spindles and cores, but to be quite honest the reason is a lack of knowledge of what I needed and when I saw the auction it was too close to closing to find out everything. I guess working on these old cars teaches lessons about more than just working on cars, but regardless I am happy with my purchase because I have something now that I want but did not have before. Next time I decide to go for an ebay auction I'll have to do a little more research... hopefully I'll get this useful information from all of you before I bid instead of after. graemlins/clonk.gif
But regardless of the price that I (over?)payed, I greatly appreciate all your advice and comments.
