: Boss Motorsports 338???
Bergsvette Aug 28th, 09, 11:20 PM What are your opinions for the 338, and who sells them? I am thinking of getting a set of 18's up front and 20's in the rear for my '67/
Thanks for your opinions / information.
Nick
DriverzInc Aug 31st, 09, 3:05 PM The backspaces that they make are all wrong. I have been selling a lot of Foose Legends in the right backspace for 67s. 18s and 20s are not a problem, and we even have them with a 20x10 for the rear! Let me know if you are interested, you can call toll free below.

Interesting that you say that. I've seen a few pictures of Chevelles with the 338's and they fit just fine. What is it about the backspacing that is "all wrong"? I was going to buy these wheels because they are such a good price and made in the USA.
ulySSes Sep 1st, 09, 10:24 PM Here's a '67 with them. The fit looks fine to me.

Yours was one of the Chevelles I was referring to. Actually, I was just reading more because I was worried I was wrong about the backspacing. I am thinking of 18x8 in the front and 20x10 in the rear. The rear backspacing is 6.225" so that is pretty much perfect. I can put a 305 tire on it even. The backspacing on the front will be 4.5". Again, that sounds right to me.

Ok I am sold! Who sells them and does anyone know what size tire he is running on the rear? It may change my mind from 20's to 18's...
troubled5150 Sep 3rd, 09, 1:34 AM I have a 68 Chevelle and I have been considering the same wheels with 20's on the back and 18's on the front. Will the 20x10 inch wheel work on the back and if so what backspacing?
protouring66 Sep 3rd, 09, 11:16 AM I know there are several stores on ebay that sell them but customer support is iffy at at best with one of those, most of the local custom audio/wheel shops around here (kansas city area) sell them i would try your local area to find out sizing and all
Blitz Sep 4th, 09, 3:55 PM I'm not sure if it would apply to yours or any Chevelle but there is a thread that last a few pages over on a truck forum on these very same wheels. Basically major problems with them, namely the center cap not fitting once the wheels are mounted and such. And like you there were MANY parties interested because of their low price and nice looks. If you haven't already pulled the trigger I can find it for you and post it for you to go over. Like I said, I don't know if it would affect your Chevelle but I remember one person saying that they wouldn't fit anything without some effort. Their words.
protouring66 Sep 4th, 09, 7:29 PM post a link please! if not for the op then for the rest of us lookin at them
lowrollin70gmc Sep 7th, 09, 3:40 PM That's my '67 above and I'm pleased with the wheels so far. I bought all four for $500 on eBay last fall. I've put 10,000 miles on it since then and am very happy. The polished lip looks great and is easy to maintain with the cast center.
My sizes : 18x8 w/ 245/40/18 and 18x9.5 w/ 275/40/18

Blitz Sep 7th, 09, 8:07 PM This may not apply here. At the time I wasn't considering this a wheel of choice for my Chevelle so I didn't cross it over but it's something to consider anyway. Good news is they've already taken steps to resolve the issue.

lowrollin70gmc Sep 8th, 09, 1:42 AM oh and the trucks is due to a large center cap used 60 thru 88. I'm having trouble finding wheels for my 70 GMC because of that.
normie Sep 9th, 09, 6:47 PM A good website to find them http://www.jdwheels.com I am looking into these as well..
But I am not sure I want 18's on my 71.. Anyone have any photos of 18" wheels on their 70-72?
ulySSes Sep 9th, 09, 7:23 PM Here's a 70 found in the same thread I found that '67 on.
18x8's all the way around.

Clint44 Sep 11th, 09, 6:23 PM I wish the GM and Ford Boss 338 20x10's had the same backspace.(6.25" vs 6.81") If they did,I'd order a pair of them today. My BH 57 has 5x4.5 bolt center wheels but I need 6.25" backspace, not 6.8". That extra half inch bs would be tough to compensate for.
Clint44 Sep 12th, 09, 12:48 AM What do you guys honestly think about the quality of the Boss 338 wheels? My local Discount Tire will sell me a pair of them in 20x10 sizing for $350. That's dirt cheap for a wheel of that size so it makes me wonder how good they are when everyone else out there wants at least double that Per Wheel.
gso68 Sep 12th, 09, 11:20 PM Can anyone tell me if the tire/wheel combination lowrollin70gmc used on his '67 will fit without any body or suspension mods on my '68 coupe?
ldhopper09 Sep 14th, 09, 1:48 PM I'm lookin at getting a set of these wheels for my 72 Malibu. I've been thinkin 18s in front an 20s on back. What widths, backspacing, etc. should I get? And I don't like the way my Chevelle sits so low on the rear tires, I've been thinking about adding spring spacers in the back to gain about 2". Would anyone advise against this or suggest a better method? And also, what size tires should I get

FWIW, they're made by American Eagle Wheels and they've been around a while.
Clint44 Sep 15th, 09, 11:49 PM Just figured out to run the Boss 338's on my project. I was shooting for a 20x10 wheel with 6.25" backspacing and was thinking about running a 275/35/20 tire because it's very close in diameter (27.5") to the tires I'm running now (275/60/15 @ 28"). The problem with the 20x10 Boss 338 is its offered backspacing of 6.81",way too much to meet my target. Here's what I came up with. Instead of running a 10.8" wide 275/35 tire,I can run a 295/35 that measures 11.6" wide. Better yet,the 295/35 is 28.1" tall so my speedo will not need to be recalibrated. The only downside to the 295's is their $70/each additional cost but hey, when I'm getting the 20x10 338's for $175/each,I'm still money ahead over buying way more expensive wheels at $400 and way up. Besides,I really like the looks of the 338's and can put the money saved in on a pair of full-length headers.
Sorry for the long-winded post but I'm kinda jazzed!

lowrollin70gmc Sep 16th, 09, 1:34 AM If the backspacing is too much (6.81 vs 6.25) you could use a quality 1/2" spacer to make up that difference. It would put you at 6.31 backspace. 1/2" isn't enough to start worrying about hub damage.

Seems to me you would start running out of threads on your lug studs with a 1/2" spacer, right? Where would you find a 1/2" spacer? I've run 1/4" spacers, 1 1/2",and 2" spacers but never a 1/2", 3/4",or a 1" spacer. The thicker spacers I mentioned using actually had their own studs and were made by Vette Brakes & Products.
lowrollin70gmc Sep 16th, 09, 7:37 PM http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRR-29200/?image=large
Here is one from cragar that includes new lug nuts (but they're the wrong style for the Boss 338s). If you are running out of thread on your studs you can take one out and down to the local parts store/farm supply and get 10 new lugs that are of proper length for full engagement.
edit: JEGS has spacers from billet specialties, baer, and cragar that would be better for your trike.
Clint44 Sep 16th, 09, 8:06 PM Thanks for the information. It's always good to learn something new.
Clint44 Sep 22nd, 09, 10:21 PM I think I might have found what I was looking for. These are .313in. thick.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GOR-SP602/?image=large
72ragtop Sep 22nd, 09, 11:18 PM Not sure I'd want to use that style spacer unless the wheel used old stle mag lugs that went thru the wheel and into the spacer. Jim.
Clint44 Sep 27th, 09, 5:00 PM I've used 1/4" disc brake spacers many times w/o problems. These are only a little over .060 thicker and this time,I'm going to be using an extended reach lug nut.
I ordered a pair of 20x10 338's w/gray spokes and 295/35/20 Nitto Invo tires so we'll soon see how it all fits. My only concern is getting the wheel centered in the wheelwell as there's plenty of room for bigger rolling stock. My guess is a pair of 11" wide wheels and 315 tires would easily fit, maybe bigger.
mjdwyer23 Nov 2nd, 09, 9:04 AM Back to the top -- is anyone running these with c5 brakes?
mighty454 Mar 4th, 10, 11:16 AM So, I just got done putting some front 2" drop spindles with new stock size springs on my 72 A-Body with 3" drop springs in the back. I'm getting ready to order Boss 338s 20x10 6.25 bs and 18x8 4.5 bs. Anyone else running this setup that can recommend tire sizes for me?
I want to get this right the first time around. Thanks
Phaeton Mar 6th, 10, 11:50 AM 18"-8" in front 20"-10" in rear. 2" dropped spindles c5 brakes. Rears fit but need to be spaced out towards the body to look correct in my opinion. Car looks like a 4X4 needs to be dropped bad but have to wait til car is complete to get the correct stance.

Bergsvette Mar 6th, 10, 9:44 PM 20x10's in the rear and 18x8.5's up front. 283x30x20 in the back and 255x35x18 in the front.

Clint44 Mar 18th, 10, 11:44 PM Just got my 20x10 Boss 338's and Nitto Invo 295/35/20's mounted up. I ended up using a 7/16" spacer and 1/4" extended reach lugs. Here's a pic:

Yes the back is up about 2" above stock. I have talked to the people at Hotchkiss and Prodigy Customs and they have told me not to worry that it will drop once I get everything in it. I am hoping they are right, I need at leaste two inches to make it look close.
Machoman Mar 20th, 10, 7:43 AM I'm thinking of getting Boss 338 for my 68 Chevelle. I just can't make up my mind whether to go with front wheel 18x8 Offset: +2mm, Backspace: 4 1/2" and rare wheel 18x9.5 Offset: -4mm, Backspace: 5" OR 20 x 8.5" Offset: +14mm, Backspace: 5 1/4". Will they fit perfectly? As I live in Thailand, I can't get them try on until they arrive. Please advise which combination is the perfect one. If anyone got a 68 with those combination, please post picture for consideration. Where should I buy them, should I just buy from ebay? Their offer so sweet, free shipping (inside US), Chrome Caps, valve stems, chrome lug nuts. Please advise on dealer. Thank you in advance.

The 18x8 fronts with +2mm offset will fit fine. Zero offset on a 18x9.5 is 5.25" backspace so the fit will be a little closer but should be ok. Same with the 20x8.5's with +14mm offset.

The 18 X 8's will clear C5 brakes, have them on my car. Machined my own brackets. The 18 X 9.5's would need a spacer, about 1/4" I think, due to a different pad height.
Jim.
crazycarguy22 Jul 12th, 11, 1:37 AM I am looking to get the Boss 338 wheels too. I was planning on getting 18x8 in the front and 18x9.5 in the back, but was told by my transmission guy chevelles can't handle a tire that wide in the back without modification. However, I am not sure that is the case. Currently I have a 12 bolt rear end from a 71 el camino in my 72 chevelle.
If anyone can offer their advice or expertise I would greatly appreciate the help.

The rear from an Elco is the same for the Chevelle. The earlier 64-67 rears are a bit narrower then the 68-72.
1fast71elco Jul 12th, 11, 1:40 PM Will fit perfectly! Great looking wheel in my opinion, but I'm biased.

crazycarguy22 Jul 12th, 11, 3:58 PM Awesome, thanks for the quick responses. I can't wait to get them purchased and put on the car. I just had a major rear end and transmission overhaul so the car has been at the shop for weeks and new wheels will be the perfect finishing touch.
crazycarguy22 Jul 13th, 11, 11:46 PM Just ordered my Black 338's today, got 18x8 for the front and 18x9.5 for the rears. Now I just have to pick a tire. I've been looking at the Nitto NT05, Nitto NT Neogen ZR, Hankook Ventus R-S3 and will be making a decision soon.
Belair427 Jul 23rd, 11, 3:49 PM Just installed 338s yesterday on my sons 70 they are 18 x 8 with 245/45/18 and 18 x 9.5 with 295/45/18 stock suspension and drum brakes all around with no clearance issues at all. I plan to convert to discs on the front and lower the rear by 2-3 inches.
