: Fuel pump cuts out

Hi,

On my 71 chevelle the electric fuel pump cuts in and out. Played with the wire on the fuse box and it looks like the previous owner went off a splice. There is a red and black wire. The black wire can't be the ground, any ideas what its there for? So the red and blk are crimped into a plastic connector that connects to the medal tab on the box. If I hold it on in a certain spot the fuel pump sounds strong. Any better way to connect the electric fuel pump? should I possibly install a seperate switch to power the fuel pump off the battery or no? Just don't want to start messing with the carb until I'm getting 100% fuel to the motor.

Bordens47@charter.net is my email.

Thanks,
Scott

On my Elect. fuel pump....... Black is Ground, ( - )
Red is hot or ( + )
My black is bolted to the frame rail, My red or + is going to the pump via an insulated wire from the toggle switch.

Hey there

thanks for the info. Looks like the fuel pump is ok. I have an HEI Accel Distributor and a mechanic for over 20 years said that could be the issue. To him I'm getting plenty of fuel, it will studer a little even when driving at the same speed so either a plug is bad which are only 2yrs old, the Accel Distrib. needs to go bye bye and get an MSD, or install the MSD 6AL and see if that helps which is on my to do list anyway. Your thoughts...
