: 30-spline 8.5"/8.6" TrueTrac in 8.5" case -- is this doable?

While busy doing other stuff, I managed to pick up an 8.5" 10-bolt rear out of a '74 Nova rear that I'll be (eventually) installing into my '69 Camaro. I'm planning on having a TrueTrac and 3.73's installed as well as picking up some new axles.

From other discussions, I know folks are installing a 30-spline Eaton posi in the 8.5's along with 30-spline axles, but I'm not sure if this would play out for the TrueTrac as well. Since the 30 spline axles and 30 spline carrier are essentially the same cost as the "stock" 28 spline setup, this would be a no/low cost upgrade.

Is this as easy as installing the 30-spline 8.5"/8.6" carrier (913A481 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DTL-913A481/)) along with the special/larger carrier bearings and an appropriate 30-spline conversion axle (like these from Moser (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSR-A103002/))? I'm just trying to get an idea of what I'm asking for before I get some cost quotes locally.

Oh, and before anyone tries to talk me out of the TrueTrac :D -- I have NO plans to drag race the car, but do hope to run some autocross events (and maybe get to a road course). I'm OK trading off some two-wheel-peel ability in a straight line in order to pick up some better grip coming off corners under power -- had a Torsen in an old autoX car and loved it.

Thanks!

t,
you have the right idea. you can use axles from a 65-67 chevelle 12 bolt application as well as 67-69 camaro and 68-72 nova 12 bolts too. just get the 30 spline with a 29 5/8 length. tom

12 bolt axles need some slight machine work before they will work in the 8.5. The c clip button on the 12 bolt axle is .312 and must be cut down to .250 to work in the 8.5.

Thanks for the info -- Looks like I'll probably be going with DTS (http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/index.html) for the install/setup since they're about 50 minutes from me and seem to have a good reputation. Their prices are competitive too, but they want to install Moser "Custom Alloy" Axles...

A couple of follow-up questions:
1) What is the difference between Moser's "Custom Alloy Axles (http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/Axles/customalloy.html)" at ~$345 a pair versus their "C-clip Forged Street Axles (http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/Axles/cclip.html)" at ~$245 a pair? I'm assuming better material, etc. for the "Custom Alloy" jobs, but for the extra $100, I'm not sure I really need the upgrade (thoughts?)

2) If I go with the "Street" axles (A103002 (http://store.moserstore.net/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Moser_Store&Product_Code=A103002&Category_Code=)), will I need new C-clips or can the old "28-spline" C-clips be re-used.

3) Anyone know the hole diameter that Moser uses on their axles for the 7/16" wheel studs?

At the moment, I'm thinking I'll let DTS install/set up the Diff, R&P, axles seals & bearings, and go with the "Street" axles and stab them in myself. I figure I'd have to pull the axles and C-clips to swap over my 11" drums anyway..

Freddie (if you read this) -- PM me a price on those 30-spline street axles and a set of 7/16 wheel studs shipped to 48104. My lug nuts will just barely take 1.5" of length, so I figure I'm looking for wheel studs in the 1.25-1.5" length (?)

Thanks!

I think the $345 axles take the 9 inch Ford axle bearings. Better check with them and see if they are wanting to use c clip eliminators or install new housing ends. The $245 axles are the same ones that I sell for about the same price. Studs are $25. I hate to miss a sale, but in this case you would be better off getting them at DTS and saving the $30 shipping cost. You will have to remove the axles to install the brakes. You can use the same c clips.
