: How long do drums last?

My car had been sitting inside a body shop for the past 8 years. I took the drums off and it was nothing but dust and grime in there. Would it be a good idea to get everything changed dealing with the brakes or just replace what might be bad?

I'm no expert on these matters, so please bare with the question. Thanks
:D

They last indefinitely until they've been machined too many times.

You can take 'em to any auto parts store and find out if they're within spec.

I replaced all four drums when I bought the car in '96. I had to have one drum turned since then. I converted to front discs in November of 2002, so those two drums are no longer an issue.

I replace brake shoes every year whether they need it or not, and I use stock replacement pads because they're easy on the drums.

You may want to replace your brake hardware. But your drums won't have gone bad from just sitting unless they're pitted or something.

Thanks for the info, and I would really like to replace mine with disc brakes as well. But that will take a while to do, money wise. Thanks for the information. Take care
