I have a 72 chevelle ss 350 ac car. the vins show that it is a true ss car, but it has a malibu dash. could a ss car come with a malibu dash. i dont believe the dash has been changed.

You can't tell if a 72 was an SS by the VIN unless it had a 454. A 350 you could only tell if you had a build sheet, POP, or some other way of verifying.

Ditto to what Jon said, the Z15 SS option was just that, an option just like a radio or A/C. Nothing in the VIN unless the 454 engine was ordered and nothing on the trim tag would indicate the SS option was ordered. If the car is a Malibu and has a sweep dash it was not ordered with the SS option. The SS option changed the dash from a sweep speedometer layout to a round pod layout. See dash layouts at http://www.chevellestuff.com/1970/70ss.htm - the same general format was carried over to 1971 & 1972 as well.

FWIW, a POP (showing the engine code) on a 1971 or 1972 Chevelle will not prove it's an SS either unless the 454 engine was ordered since both 350 engines and the 402 engine could be ordered without the SS option.

I have heard that if its a baltimore car a "D" on the cowl tag says it was an SS, but this could just be a rumor.

I know it is possible. My dad has a 1966 true SS Chevelle but his has a malibu emblem on his dash. He told me one of his buddies bought a 1966 Malibu back in 1969 but his had an Super Sport emblem on his dash. Kind of weird.

I also heard of a true SS car having Malibu door panels because they ran out of the Super Sport panels. Maybe that is what happened.

I heard that you could get a Hemi in a Chevelle if you knew the right people.:p
But some 70 Chevelle SS454s did come with Malibu emblems on the door panels.

Wishful thinking
You have a Malibu, enjoy it for what it is.

Correct, the 396 SS came with SS emblems on the door panels but most 454 SS came with Malibu emblems. These are minor cosmetic differences but a sweep dash instead of guage dash, I doubt they would let that slide.

I bought a brand new left over 69 Chevelle a few yrs ago, and it had the original hemi diesel straight line 6 cyl engine. But the real strange thing it had, was a front bench seat, and rear buckets. I have the build sheet for it too. It looks like a brand new sheet. You would never know it was a 40 yrs old,:D

Sorry, one of those days:p

The vins are 13637 so this would make it a sport coupe not just a malibu right?

13637 does mean its a v8 sport coupe, which is nicer than the bare bones chevelle chevelle. The 13637 code is a base for the ss however does not definitively prove it is. You need the build sheet for that.

Also the vin shouldn't start with 13637 for 72. Are you sure it is a 72?

My 72 vin is 1D37J2BS23554 It is a real small block SS car. It should have a 12 bolt rear with the rear swaybar that is just as old and crusty as the rest of the car. The " J " stands for 4 bbl 350 motor. B is Baltimore. D I have no idea but I'm sure somebody here does. Looking at the price of mine on the title says $2923 bucks back new in the day. Kind of funny.

The 350 SS cars came with a 10 bolt. The 12 bolt was only on the big block or it was option that you could purchase. As for the "D" on the cowl tag no one is certain what it means, but some people think the baltimore plant put it on cars to list it as an SS. Do you have the original documentation for the car?
