Where should I find the VIN on the transmission of a 1970 SS Chevelle 4 speed, do you have to remove the trans to see it or should it be on the side?

I have pictures of ones from Baltimore that are on the side, by the assembly date. I think the Arlington built cars were on the top also. Obviously if you don't see yours on the side, look on top with a mirror and light.
