Too much

THe rear deck is no big deal to do yourself. Take the back seat peices out, remove the speaker grills, slide out the panel, slide in the new one, reinstall speakers & seat peices.

The headliner is a different story.
Around here I've been quoted $400+ to install a new headliner.

Several of my friends have followed the steps posted on this site to install their own headliners- when its time to do mine, i'll try it myself rather than paying.

I did my own headliner and it came out really nice....it was many years ago and all I remember is what a pain in the butt it was.

HI Chris,

If you would like to do the headliner yourself we have headliner kits for under a hundred bucks. Here's a link to them on our site.

I'd do it for ya if you were in NJ :). I've done a couple of headliners. as long as you take your time, it's not that big of a deal to do it. I was quote $350 to do the one in my 69 Charger. For that much $$, I could have bought and destroyed 6 headliners. I fgured it was worth it to try myself and did a decent job on it. THe next one I did in a 73 Cuda came out almost perfect.

Here is the one I did in the Cuda....

The rear deck package tray shelf is cake. Pull the seat out, remove old, slide in the new, put seat back in.

Headliners really arent that hard. But I guess tehy shuoldnt be for a guy who did auto upholstery for 3 years...Its not that bad. Like everyone said, take your time and be patient. It should come out fine.

My hats off to you guys, I tried the one in my Camino and couldnt do it for the life of me without royally screwing it up.

I feel at $100 I didnt pay enough, guy came out from an upholstery shop, spent 5 hrs on it and did a beyond perfect job.

I should have mentioned these things though. Make sure you mark the headline bows in sequence and what holes they came out of. This is very important otherwise you might start tearing your hair out trying to figure out which one goes where.
Second, after you have the headliner hanging loose in the car, pull the front towards the windshield and hook it on those little metal teeth. Same with the back. Pull it tight also and work from the center out towards the sides. When that's done, you can start pulling on the sides of the headliner to remove the wrinkles.
Another thing to do is lay it out in the sun for a couple hours so it's nice and pliable. Makes it a little easier to work with.

Toms got the right approach alright. Let that sucker sit out there for a good long while. I used to do it with a steam gun. It makes the material nice and stretchy so you can have your way with it. You can also apply a little more steam in certian places shuold the material cool down and start giving you trouble. The sun is just as good, only it doesnt keep the material stretchy for as long.

the two screws i have to remove in order to take the rear seat back out are star screws? im not sure if that term is correct but where a philips screw has only 4 points this has a lot more. is that the same for everyone?
