Just found out that the lower trim on the metal bucket seats skits is suppose to be color of the metal skirt and not chrome; but olds, buick, and pontiac were chrome. However, the upper trim around the metal back panel should be chrome.

Is this skit trim available in the seat color for the bottomlike white, and chrome for the top? Or how would you suggest painting it, so it doesn't crack? thanks.

This wouldn't apply to ALL 66/67 Chevelles, because I have had/seen several original bucket seat cars (1966 Chevelles), and they all had chrome trim on the original bottom skirts...

Not sure where they assembled seats, but perhaps different assembly plants/suppliers did it differently... ALL the cars I have seen were Fremont-built...

As for painting it so it won't crack, I'd assemble the trim on the skirt, and spray a final color coat on the whole assembly...

I have owned a lot of 66 chevelles over the years, all were bucket seat cars. I don't recall any of them not having the chrome on the lower seat panels. In fact I have never seen one that had color matched trim.

The original '67 Chevelle buckets (in black) that I recently purchased has black trim on the metal lower skirting.
I'm converting the seats to med blue, painting the metal backs & lowers, and replacing the well weathered original trim with repop chrome.

There seems to be some discrepancy here.

Take a look at the chevelle for sale on ebay that Jeff mentions. Looks pretty original, owner forgot to mention 67 or up power brake booster. Maybe thats even a replacement interior on the seats, only way to know if the inside if the vinyl is stamped "65 Naugahide".

Would think this vinyl trim would be applied at Fisher plant. Was this Fisher plant different than the ones doing the other GM cars?

Isn't there always some discrepancy with these cars??? :D

Whether or not Chevrolet "intended" to only use colored lower trim wasn't the question... Apparently, they came either way...

I have no idea how these seats were assembled, but typically wouldn't the people putting the trim on the side panels NOT be the same person putting the upholstery on, and NOT even the person actually putting the side panels on the seats... Did most of these workers even know which upholstery was "Chevelle" and which wasn't (aside from the order, which probbaly used numbers without mentioning "Chevelle"). So if a set of "Chevelle" buckets came down the line, the worker would pick the appropriate colored and either "chrome or colored trim" side panels? Seems like alot of extra work for the assembly line workers. And even if it was intended, I could see it easily being overlooked as a mistake or for the sake of production (are they going to hold up the line if they ran out of colored trim)?

My first Chevelle was a little old lady car, but buckets/console (PG)... It had old faded/cracked chrome side trim and was completely original (torn seat seams too). I have another set I pulled from an original car (car parked in 1975), chrome trim. As I recall, I think I have seen the "black" trim, but the panels were not on the seat.

So whats the discrepancy? ;)

From the pic above it looks like someone in the past just painted the lower plastic's black and probably did a little "customizing" and decided to paint the "Chrome" trim also.

You guys remember...WAY BACK...when the "blacked out trim" look was popular.

I think that was even before the "monochromatic"/Miami Vice look came around.:D

When I found out the lower trim is seat color, I went to my trusty orignal 66 referance car with less then 2,000 miles on it with blue int. it also has blue trim on the bottom and chrome on the back.

If you're referring to my pic, the lower trim is molded black all the way through - never been painted. I've had the car since 1979 and that trim has been on there all this time; and most likely since Day 1.
