I have a 1969 SS and I was caught in a rainstorm a couple of weeks ago and noticed that I have a leak at the top of the rear window. Now, I am a rookie at this sort of thing and haven't attempted this before but I want to try. I think that I need to take the trim molding off, break the seal and gently push the glass from the back seat until it's free. Then I need to clean the old seal and inspect for rust, etc. My question is, is there a recommended sealer that I should use to reinstall the window? Anything that I am missing?

Thanks,
Keith

Others will chime in with possibly a better solution, but I have always used Butyl Tape (that tar-like roll off goo). If this is the method you end up using, don't make the same mistake I did on my first windshield - start running the Butyl Tape along the BOTTOM enge, not the top or the sides. It WILL leak from day one otherwise.

I can also tell you my unlce Bob and I just safely removed the front and rear glass in my 72 by using piano wire, which is a solid wire, not stranded like a guitar string (which I have used before - it sucks). The piano wire worked awesome. Just take an old broom handle, cut a couple 1 foot sections out of it, drill a small hole in the center of each, and you now have a handle to wrap the wire around. Get you on one side and a buddy on the other and go to town. Use common sense, angle the wire so it cuts without putting pressure on the glass, don't rush it, and it you get stuck, STOP and restart the wire in another spot. We just pulled it along the seal only see-sawing it when the going got tough. When it go too tough, we just pulled the wire out and stuck it in another spot.

Don't rush it, and don't push on the glass too much, just enough to see your progress. The rear glass is not tempered, so pushing on it will be bad. I'd wish you luck, but I don't think you'll need it. It's not that bad.

Keith, the thing you need to be prepared for is the condition of the metal around the rear window. Your may find your's to be in great condition, but you often find damage from rust that will need to be fixed before the glass can be reinstalled.
