Hello I just recently bought a 69 floor shift automatic steering colum foor my El camino. It needs to be rebuilt and I don't know ware to start. I't need to be completly taken apart repainted and have the bearings replaced. I need your opinion on weather I should do it my self or send it out to be done bye a pro. How hard is it to do myself? And if I have it done by a pro I need someplace in socal.

I know that several Corvette suppliers have kits for replacing the upper and lower bearings in the standard (non-adjustable) as well as the T&T steering columns. I would guess that there are GM A-car suppliers that have the bearing kits as well.

(I am sure that the bearings in the standard Corvette column are the same as Chevelle so if yours is a standard column the parts are available through Corvette suppliers if no where else.) The lower end bearings and retainers for a tilt column are the same as the standard column - so those parts are available.

I just am not sure about the upper end bearings for a tilt column compared to a Corvette T&T. You might have to search some of your Chevelle suppliers for those parts.

With regard to rebuilding your steering column, I think that you could save a lot of money by doing it yourself. I might suggest this websight:
www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp (http://www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp)

Posted at the websight are a series of standard column and tilt column disassembly and repair papers and pics to assist you in your task. Theses papers may take a bit of reading and review, but all the step by step information is there. Also, additional assistance is only a posting away on this websight.

Good luck,
