HI guys this is probably something easy but i dont know,I have a 68 with a HEI so theres no old style coil so the wire diagram shows to wire it to hot side of coil the to the starter small post and the purple wire to the other side small post and then batter cable to mail post, well if i hook it up that way the coil wire side starts to get hot and burn the wire when key is on and it will not turn starter over please help Joe ps thanks

Remove the wire that went from the starter to the coil, it's not needed. Replace the original, resistance, wire from bulk head connector coil + with a regular 12g wire. Or run new 12g from fuse block IGN lug to coil +.

Resistance wire supplied around 9v to coil while running, HEI needs 12v. Wire from battery to coil supplied 12v to coil while starting. If you replace the resistance wire with 12g regular wire you're all set.

The purple wire, from ignition switch, stays where it is. Just eliminate the yellow wire that went from the other post to coil.

engine side of starter or other side

Purple always goes to the engine side of the solenoid. That is the wire that is energized ONLY while you are actually cranking your engine.

The wire that was on the passenger side of the solenoid can be taped off on the wire harness. It is no longer needed with an HEI system. Make sure that you tape it securely to the harness such there is no chance that it will ever ground. That yellow wire becomes energized also each time you crank your engine.

Like Hank said the yellow bypass wire on the starter's "R" terminal is not needed with a non points type distributor but it won't hurt anything to leave it connected as long as the other end isn't touching anything.
In fact if the other end is connected to the BAT terminal of the HEI along with the ignition feed wire, it could possibly help because it sends a full 12 volts during starter cranking. (not that it's necessarily needed)
