I am replacing the ball joints on my 71 and when I pressed in the new one and put the rubber boot on it goes right over the ball. I tried to push it on further with a piece of PVC pipe that is the same diameter but it only goes on so far and that's it.

I pushed it to the bottom of the ball joint but it doesn't fell very secure. It can be pulled off with just a little bit of a tug.

The one I took off had a band that went around the outside of the boot that was pushed to the bottom of the ball joint trapping the cover on much more securely.

Are the PST ones supposed to have a band or do they just sit on there like in the photo below ?

Thanks !

Tom

They go on exactly the way you have it in the photo, replaced whole front end on my wifes 70 cutlass last year.

Also, when you put your spindle on, it will push down on the boot a lot. The edges will probably slide down a bunch over time also.

From the photo, it looks good. I just did mine last week. However mine fit on real snug. I had to tap them on with a hammer. Wasn't easy. You want them snug to keep dirt out , and grease in. If their not snug, I'd call PST and have them send you out a new set. Maybe they stretched out somehow. Good luck
