: metering valve?
Dusty May 17th, 04, 9:40 PM Question my 69 velle, on the old power brake booster, there was a metering valve just below the master cyl., as well as a proportioning valve on the frame, do I still need to use the metering valve? I have front disc and rear drums. I can't find documentation for a metering valve on a 69,only the proportioning valve. I found info on 67, where a metering valve was mentioned. Any help would be great. Sorry I've been away from the site for a long time, just now getting back into the resto job with hopes of having her on the road next summer. Dusty
136679ss May 17th, 04, 10:57 PM yes, absolutely need this to prevent front brake lockup, what the metering valve does is delay pressure to the disks, since they react quicker than the drums, so you get even distribution. if you have got an assembly manual there is a whole section listed for installation, and original part numbers. part is readily available as a repro for about 120 or if you go used the correct piece for a 69 will have a large hexagonal head at the front valve assembly. hope this helps. jason.
ssal396 May 18th, 04, 3:19 PM Is it totally nessessary to use the exact one, or is one from anothe application that would work??
The reason that I ask is because Year One wants 150 for the right one, I don't care about stock appearance, just trying not to break the bank ;)
Got_CID? May 18th, 04, 5:18 PM The valve on the frame is just a distribution block. You can get a combination valve (metering and distribution) from a 71 that will take care of both so you won't need the metering valve on the brake booster. They're around $55 from gmpartsdirect. Do a search for "combination valve" in this section for part numbers.
BTW I've searched extensivly about metering valves because mine is leaking, and theres a few guys that have removed them competly with no ill affects. In fact, I competely bypassed mine until I decide what to do, which will probably be getting the 71 combo vlave.
'69Larry May 19th, 04, 1:07 PM I'm one of those guys who's driven many miles without a metering valve without any problems. But I am replacing it because I'm going to a Hydroboost setup, and I want the system to be stock. Without the metering valve, I can feel the back brakes coming on after the front brakes...it was like a very subtle two-stage effect. It was so subtle that maybe it was my imagination. In any case, you can get by without the thing.
vendo May 19th, 04, 10:14 PM can the valve screw up and make the brake pedal real hard, like making power brakes feel like man brakes
Dusty May 19th, 04, 10:38 PM Thanks for the replies, It's been two years since I took the car apart, so I'm drawing on my "Fading" memory. Feels great to be putting her back together though.!! Dusty
BlueSS454 May 19th, 04, 10:40 PM I ran simply nothing more than the distribution block on my 70 when I put the discs on it with no problems for 2 years. The brakes worked just fine. I decided to put the correct setup on it for that reason, for it to appear correct. Just to ask, if it came off your car, whynot just put it back on? Also, why was it removed in the first place?
Dusty May 20th, 04, 7:53 PM When I bought my chevelle project car, a lot of the car was already unassembled. It came with lots of boxes that contained lots of parts. Now I'm putting some of those parts back together and sometimes I need to make sure the part came off from a 69? That's what I like about this website and the helpful folks that respond. If I can't find it in my assembly manuals, I can always ask here. Thanks again.. Dusty
136679ss Jun 12th, 04, 2:21 AM GOT is absolutely correct, you can get what is known as a combi valve, first placed on 71 cars w/discs, and things will work fine to bypass the metering valve, I believe the lines are slightly different though, as I just removed this setup from my 69 to go original proper prop valve metering valve combo, and yes you could go without the metering valve if you prefer, but risk front braking only ( more frequent front disk brake jobs, non adjusting rears, and warped rotors) not to mention the adverse affects these things do to straight line driving, and the ever annoying shimmy upon braking. $$$$$$$$$$$$ there's my .02 jason.
'69Larry Jun 13th, 04, 3:35 PM On a '69 or '70, DOES anyone know if the distribution block/proportioning valve on the frame has a "reset" button? I thought the prong for the "BRAKE" warning light wire might be a button, but I can't get it to budge.
I can't bleed the rear brakes on my '69, and can't find any such "reset" switch. This has me baffled.
