I have a friend who is converting his non-gauge dash in a 71 Chevelle to gauges. My original fuel gauge had a ceramic resistor on it and the new ones don't have this and we're needing to know if they need this before he installs the dash. He doesn't want to have to pull it out again if it does.
I don't think they need it if it didn't come with one.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Went through this with a friend of mine on his 71 GS Buick, swapping from lights to gauges. The Buick had three resistors white, blue, and red. I believe it was on the fuel, oil and temp. gauges, without the resistors the gauges either did not read or pegged out. As near as we could figure they are either drop resistors or step up resistors, depending on the gauge, to make them read right. Fooled around and found a used set of gauges, robbed the resistors off of the back and everything works correctly now. We found nobody that repo. these resistors. Thomas

i bet you can get "repro" resisters at Radio Shack if you know the values.

I checked on another gauge cluster out of a 70 Monte Carlo and it has some kind of flat material with metal ends that fit over the studs and exposed wire windings.
I looked at the gauges I took out of my Chevelle and it has the ceramic resistors on the Temp (vert) and the fuel (horiz). Both have yellow tape on them. From what we have found out, the yellow was for 90 OHM and red was for 86 OHM. Monte Carlos used the red which would make the temp gauge read cooler. Must have been something GM did to make the driver think his car was running cooler.
My replacement gauges didn't have any resistors on them and they seem to work properly.
Thanks for your help. We're finding out a little more information as we go.
