Just installed a Grand Cherokee steering box in my 71. I cannot believe the difference it made. Now when I turn the steering wheel something happens. The center vagueness is totally gone. If you are still running an old steering box, change it now. You will love it.

It did this in my 72 el camino. I am very happy with the upgrade.

Nick, I bought a rebuilt GC steering box from Auto Zone and used the adapters and rag joint from Lee Mfg. Went in real easy - only problem/surprise was that I had to have the front end aligned because the steering wheel ended up off-center. I know this is the "budget" approach - some guys are leery of using a rebuilt box, but hope I got a good one.

I'm going to have to do a little searching about this.......While driving I have noticed a ton of center vaugeness but never really knew how to describe it! :)

Some yards are letting you strip clunkers before they crush em, there are a lot of Grand Cherokees in there now.

I found my Grand Cherokee steering box on Craigslist. A local guy was parting out his Grand Cherokee. I paid $40 for the steering box.

If you do a search you will find a few threads on this swap.

Very cool, I installed a Lee 670 box the other day with all new supporting parts. Still up in the air but glad to hear that it gives good results. I never really felt what one of these cars drive like "new".

Do you have power steering as well or is it manual? I want to go this route on my 65 but want to stay with manual steering.

Power Steering - I don't know if this swap will work with manual steering - did Jeeps come with manual steering?

Does this mod give you any better road feedback or just quicker steering? Mine is stock and there is virtually no feedback from the road. It's one of the few things I detest about my car.

Yes it gives you better road feel. The GC box makes you put a little effort into turning the steering wheel. Just like a modern car

I did the same exact thing except I got my box from advance auto parts. I talked to Mr. Lee Mfg on the phone for about an hour...very interesting fella with quite a history. Definitely a nice upgrade. No issues or leaky fittings. Well worth the $$$$ and overall is still cheaper than buying a quick ratio box from any of the reproduction catalogs.
