I am having to face the reality of selling my Chevelle now that I have another baby due in a couple of months. I have delayed it as long as possible, but its time. So I guess I am just looking for help from you guys about ho much to sell it for. Here are some specs and pics, feel free to ask anything that might help make the price recommendations more accurate.

1971 Malibu Chevelle 4 door
about 78K miles. Here is its history as I have been told. I am the 3rd owner. First owner was a lady who purchased it here in GA. I know the GA part is at least true because the rear bumper still has the dealership sticker on it. The lady drove it for a couple of years and parked it, cant remember the reason. Eventually her nephew sold it for her to the guy bought it from. He repainted it and dropped in the new engine, brakes, soem add ons, etc before having to sell off his collector cars because of a move to Chicago. Now its mine. I do have 2 partial build sheets that pretty much equal one whole sheet so I can verify the orig color etc. She was built in Texas, shipped to GA and has been down here all her life. I have a binder with the orig owners manual, the build sheets, some non-reproduction sales brochures from 1971, and a brief illustrated description of anything I have done to it

It has the original interior/exterior color scheme with the addition of some SS style stripes. Most of the interior pieces have been repainted so the color isn't exact, but its the same general theme. Exterior has been repainted at some point and is OK. Couple of minor rust spots were painted over and there are about 6 noticeable chips in the paint around the vehicle. Nothing larger than a pea. Front seat has been recovered but the rear is orig and has a 4 inch long split on a seam. The headliner is in OK shape but has a split in a rear seam about 8 inches long. The body is good and straight, the floor pans are in great shape and I have pics to prove it from the sound deadening install. I was really surprised at how solid this body is. She runs really well...I drive it almost everyday. Starts right up, runs strong on the highway up into the 70mph range. A couple of months ago I took it for a 4 hour drive through the mountains without an issue. I don't push it past that, but it would do more I think. Other than the radio, everything works, but some things like the AC could work better. It needs new weatherstripping and window felts, but doesnt leak from what I can tell. I keep it in the garage but have been caught in parking lots in rain.

I would sum it up as a great cruiser and a solid performer as is, with much more potential. You could take it to a little drive in show and not be embarrassed. I get compliments and comments everywhere at least once a day driving this thing.

About 5K would be MY guess too for a 4 door that has had that much done to it already.
Looks like a nice car.

I always regret letting go of my toys. It's obvious you have put alot of effort into this.

Looks like a decent car. Does it still have a title? I know in GA it's not required on a vehicle this old but it is in some states.
From what I've seen available lately around here, I think the car will sell in the $4000-$4500 range.
I think the car would do better without the stripes. :(

nope, no title. And I agree on the stripes actually. the previous owner did it. If I repainted i was thinking of going with a more subtle two tone color scheme.

I dont know its value but I do like it. If only I could convince my wife we needed another addition to the fleet.

Nice car, Interior is beautiful. Stripes suck. I'm going to throw 4-5K out there.

a/c in these older cars is terrible and a/c is mandatory down here in the south. Plus this will make 3 kids...two in car seats. and I am moving so my commute is going from 5 minutes to 35 minutes. Not gonna happen.

Your A/C just is not working right, mine will freeze your willy off.

The factory A/C in my '70 4dr hardtop I believe could make ice cubes. ;)
And I live just across town so the weather is just about the same.

then you guys need to help me out because everybody else says its just crappy at best. The AC compressor is supposed to be new but the airflow is low and cool. I don't feel much, if any, difference between low and high. I was going to replace the blower but with so many people saying it wont be much better I never worried about it.

First we need pressures and using an A/C thermometer we need outlet temps. Air flow and A/C temperature can be related but are usually seperate issues.

Do your vents work properly, heat comes out the bottom, A/C through vents and def/defog through the windshield vents? Do you have a hot water valve on the pass inner fender, a 71 should unless it was a cross 71 to 72. Is it opening and closing properly? On A/C the heater core should not be getting coolant flow with a hot water valve.

I believe the vents are working properly. been a while since I tested the heat. I do get some airflow from the lap vents on A/C. For the other stuff, I need to look up some pics. I am not very familiar with a/c systems. I just got an assembly manual so I'll check it.

Just the opposite. Those older compressors running R12 will run circles around the newer ones. Sounds like you just need some maintenance. :D

ok so I paid a little more attention to whats its doing since I have some hope now. Here are my primary issues. This is all with the temp controls set on max AC unless otherwise stated.

1. output has no dipped to almost nothing from the dash vents. The majority of the air comes from the black floor vent located on the tranny hump (that phrase sounds terrible). The amount of air that comes out on the first 3 levels is nearly identical. On high I get nothing. I don't get any noises or anything, just no airflow. I get a trickle of air from the lap vents under the stearing column and the glove box. as for the heater core and hot water valve...I need a diagram or pic please. I am still learning my way around the advance systems. This car is my first delving into anything past bolt-ons. I have heard people refer to cleaning out the collector...unfortunately I don't know exactly where that is. I can take some good pics of my engine bay if anybody wants to play "where's waldo" with my ac system. Its funny how you think you know about cars until you jump into the deep end with a car that is old and doesn't even have everything original and in the right place.

2. temp is cool, not cold. This is hard to really judge and will address it once airflow is where it should be. For simplicity I can avoid the temp issues for now.

Sounds to me like you have a vacuum problem. The air box under your dash has little doors that open and close depending on the selector position. If you take the dash pad off and carefully take the center dash vent out you can get to the climate control head. There are a mess of vacuum lines. You want to check the lines to make sure they are not broken, Also check the vacuum line on the back of your engine that connects to the vacuum port going through the firewall to make sure it is connected and in good shape and getting vacuum (do this before taking the dash pad off).

Each vacuum line in the dash operates servos that open and close doors. The main door I would be concerned about is behind the feeder duct just above the floor discharge. I have had a clip on the door break and not allow the dash to flip vents. With the engine running move the climate control lever to the differnt positions and see if you hear doors flipping or vacuum leaks.

Take this in baby steps since you are new, the system is not that hard to understand and is actually kind of fun to play with. Let us know what you do and don't see.
