: another upper control arm option
Bob B. May 6th, 03, 12:36 AM I recently did the 12" tall spindle conversion to my 78 El Camino. Everything is together and had it aligned today. I used the Polepositon upper control arms that cost $250 delivered. Very nice units and half the cost of the other guys, plus very adjustable. I tried to reuse my stock uppers like I did on my 70 Chevelle but the guy said it wasn't even close.
The only draw back I see so far is that there are no bushings, have to keep the joints greased but I am under the hood every weekend any way. Ted suggested lube them up once a month.
I didn't notice a harsher ride, I used stock 5610 springs and a 1 1/4 sway bar with all other bushings being urethane.
Just for general info the swap ran about $900 which included; upper arms , LE1 rotors, 12" spindles, 4 ball joints, 4 tie rods, 4 bearings, 2 seals, urethane bushings, 2 brake hoses, labor to install bushings, alignment, calipers, pads.
I still have to get new steel brake lines as the flair nuts where rusted to the lines. I also reinforced the stock lowers for good measure. Brakes seem to work much better but haven't really got on them yet.
Didn't plan on going this far as the wife and I are separating.
By the way I have the stock set up still if someone needs it. I will update in a few days.

Did the Pole Position arms clear the frame OK?

pole possition has the arms with rubber bushings! i would switch them out. they make 2 types. i got the type with bushing in them, no grease fittings. no hassle either. i have not alligned the front end yet so i really dont know if mine will clear the frame completely without a little grinding. any grinding would only be on the very ends of the ears that are welded on to the cross shaft mounts and so far it looks like it will not be necessary but it could be usefull to gain a little more suspension travel. i have to bolt the spindles up and see if the arms will hit the frame before the ball joints reach their travel limit. i dont plan on making my car airborne so i'm not so sure i will be exceeding the travel limit anyway. and if it does bottom out whats the harm? it only can hit with the force that the coil spring can apply to it. and it is relativly gradual not and instant impact shock load.

Hey FO_FDYFO!!! I am interested in a set of your suspension fastener hardware kits and the lower control arm ball joint braces. I emailed you a few days ago at your wagons@chevelles.com email, but no reply. How do I go about getting a set??
Clint44 May 6th, 03, 8:10 PM Can I get the Pole Position A-arms to work with a stock 69 spindle? Wonder how well those arms will hold up on a daily driver?
MAXX2 May 7th, 03, 12:07 AM Guys and Gals;
There seems to be so many options/ideas out there, it makes all of our "Heads/Minds" spin.
The GW & Hotchkis options scare all of us to death price wise, and maybe they are cheap for what they offer(?)
Who really knows (?)
Chad Landry made his own set of uppers/lowers, and they most likely are as good as the rest of them (?) Maybe he is "Fine Tuning" them and will offer them to us Team Members (?)
We are really leaning towards the S-10 Disc Brake Conversion (We have the 2" Dropped Superior Spindles), and can have most of the parts in our hands from local suppliers. We currently have Beadblasted/Black powdercoated stock uppers/lowers, and can find another set (No Stress Cracks) to have reinforced by the same fabricator who just completed our NHRA Certified 185 MPH Art Morrison 10/12 Point Roll Cage (We have to add the diagonal bar above the drivers/passengers compartment, and he will certify it in excess of 200 MPH). This same fabricator states that reinforced control arms are actually as strong as the tubular control arms, however, they will not work with the tall spindle conversion(s).
Just "OUR" ideas and 2 cents worth!

FO_FDYFO May 7th, 03, 8:44 AM Jesse Stalter, i am real sorry about that. i must have deleted it by mistake. i dont recall seeing your email. i will email you. ;)
Clint44, sure they will work with stock spindles. the hole pattern for the upper ball joint is even the same. they work for hard track use why is the street any different? tongue.gif
airrj, i was messin with my front end last night and without have anything alligned properly yet i just wanted to see how bad the arms would hit the frame. all i had to do was beat with a hammer just a little bit to bend the ears over slightly. i am talking about the very outer end of the ears that help support the part of the frame that the cross shafts bolt to. some people have ground the ears down to clear, i just bent them over a little. now the arms get their full travel untill they hit the frame at a lower point. i'll be taking pics soon. :D

The street can be a more brutal environment than the race track. I'm wanting something that can handle the rigors of a daily driver and not wear out or break in 10K miles. I'm going to call Pole Position tomorrow and get their input.
Thanks.
Clint44 May 8th, 03, 2:28 PM Just talked to Ted at Pole Position and think their adjustable uppers might be a good way to go. Using my stock spindles, what balljoint would I need to order;midsize or fullsize GM?
FO_FDYFO May 9th, 03, 11:31 AM MID SIZE. you need to use the stock chevelle ball joint. if you were using the b-body spindles, you would use the full-size (b-body) ball joint. they have the same bolt pattern just different tapers on the stems that go into the spindles. also mention "team chevelle" you should be getting a discounted price. i am going to order the front end alignment tools from them. check'em out.
Bob B. May 17th, 03, 4:36 PM The bushing option was not available for 78-88 A/G body. I clearanced the frame just for good measure, you would have to have the front wheels off the ground for them to hit
