Got a question completed the replacement of most all parts on the steering on my 69 put it back together by eye. Planed on getting alignment done. Took it for a test drive steering wheel off almost 90 degrees. Now notice that my gear box has a leak. Question is can I get the steering wheel closer when doing the Gear box and removing the Pitman arm or not. If not should I just try to get wheels straight lock the steering wheel and put it back together the same way then get a alignment to fix?

This paper should help you figure out why your steering wheel is off. You didn't mention what year Chevelle. The 1969 and later locking columns are a lot less forgiving as to things needing to be centered.

My first thought was you got the pitman arm 90 degrees off. I'm no expert but just did my 67 and if the 69 is the same way, the pitman arm can only go on 4 ways, at 90 degree increments.
I had a leak at first on mine too. Just kept having to tighten the clamp on the rubber hose on the return line. Make sure your hose is pushed on far enough and tighten the crap out of it.

If the steering wheel is off 90 degrees, it could a couple of things.
1. the tie rods are not adjusted equally side to side. Verify that both sides are the same length. The alignment shop will be able to do this for you if you aren't sure.
2. The steering coupler is off on the steering box. Get the box set straight (pitman arm pointing straight back) and then remove the steering coupler and rotate it 90 degrees to get the steering straight again. If the pitman arm was off 90 degrees, you wouldn't have been able to hook up the arm to the centerlink, much less drive the car.
Hope this helps.

Sorry yes it is for a 1969. I guess I should start with replacing the the box and getting it centered. Getting the alignment done due to the fact that I know is off. Probably way off. Then if it is still not centered Lock for the other things mentioned above. I know I am going to replace the box everything else has been done and it is leaking at the input shaft. Is there any issues with replacing with a quicker lock to lock at this point?
